We invite applications for an exciting new substantive Consultant Neonatologist post at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH),part of University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB).The successful applicant will be part of BHH Neonatal Intensive care Unit team (NICU) and the Neonatal Transport Service (KIDSNTS) hosted by Birmingham Women's and Children's hospital with a 50:50 split.Hence this full time 10 PA post will have 5PA (4 DCC and 1 SPA) each at BHH and KIDSNTS.Previous experience in neonatal transport is essential and subspecialty interest in echocardiography/ cardiology will be desirable.For any Neonatal Transport Service (NTS) queries, please conact Dr Alex Philpott (NTS Lead Consultant) on alex.philpott@hee.nhs.uk/ 0121 333 9697
Main duties of the job
Heartlands Hospital
The Neonatal Unit at Heartlands is a designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within the West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (WMNODN) and provides medical care for babies of all gestations. There are over 6500 deliveries each year on site, but we aim to provide the intensive and high dependency care required by all of the 10,000 babies born within the trust each year.
The unit has 12 critical care cots, 20 special care and 7 transitional cots. Each year there are over 800 admissions to our Neonatal service. We provide 1800 days Intensive care, 2650 High Dependency almost 6000 days of Special care and 3500 Transitional care.
The Unit has facilities for conventional ventilation, high frequency oscillation and inhaled nitric oxide. It has its own Doppler ultrasound machine and equipment for cooling infants and CFM monitoring. The unit is the designated Network cooling centre. Neonatal staff perform routine cranial ultrasonography and echocardiography on site and excellent radiological facilities, including CT and MRI scanning, are also available.
We have Transitional Care facilities and an award winning Neonatal Outreach team which help with early discharges.

At BHH (5PA)
At BHH, the job plan will incorporate ITU, HDU, Special Care, non-resident nights on-call and clinics. While the post will be principally based at Heartlands Hospital, the appointee may be required to undertake a small amount of work at any of the 3 sites. In principle the BHH job plan will comprise 5 PAs with breakdown as below. A detailed job plan will be confirmed after appointment between the appointee, the present consultants and Clinical Service Lead for Neonates. Job plans are annualised over a 42 week working year.

*4 PAs- for direct Clinical care (including on calls & clinics)
*0.5 PAs for core 'Supporting Professional Activities' to support annual appraisal & revalidation with General Medical Council including active involvement in departmental and Trust governance and Quality improvement process (e.g. reviewing and scoping of incidents, undertaking root cause analysis (RCA) for incidents associated with moderate or severe harm, participation in departmental and national audits).
*0.5 PA flexible (clinical or for departmental roles) to be agreed at job planning
At KIDSNTS (5PA)
KIDSNTS was formed on 1st July 2016 to deliver a single standalone service for critically ill neonates and children in the West Midlands. This service within the West Midlands and beyond (for specialist services), is funded by NHS England and is hosted by Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospital. KIDS-NTS sit within the directorate of Urgent and Critical Care at Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospital.NTS undertakes approximately 1400 transfers/ year, moving neonates between the 4 NICUs, 5 LNUs and 2 SCUs and 2 regional specialist hospitals (Birmingham Children's and Alder Hey). The successful appointee has responsibility for neonatal transfers between neonatal units and specialist hospitals. There is a 24/7 available ITU team (1 day; 1 night) and a single person team each day. There are dedicated ambulances and neonatal equipment on site.
The KIDSNTS clinical commitments include daytime and on-calls (non-resident). 4 DCC PA and 1 SPA (0.5 SPA core, 0.5 SPA other -- e.g. governance) to the Neonatal Transport Service hosted at BWCH.
This will make a 8 DCC / 2 SPA overall post. A formal job planning meeting will take place no later than 6 months following appointment.
