The Liver unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is one of the world's biggest liver units. Liver disease is on the increase, so there are lots of developments in the care of these patients. The wards are recognised for the support they give to patients who come from all over the UK. There are fantastic opportunities to learn about the care of this group of patients, through training, liver courses and study days. The ward nurses are supported by our CNS teams. Many of our CNS have developed their skills and knowledge from working on the wards and have shaped the future of liver nursing.
Interested in joining the Liver Unit family-- we have jobs on both the medical and surgical wards (if you wish you can rotate between the two). Here you will learn the basics of caring for a patient with liver disease, learn how to support their families, collaborate closely with the multi-disciplinary tem and deliver high quality care to the patient under the care of a supportive ward team. Many patients will remain under the units care, so you will be on their journey with them; for some patients' you will see their health and quality of life restored, knowing you will have been part of that is very special.

Main duties of the job
The Liver Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital includes wards 306 (liver medicine) and ward 726 Liver Surgery. Liver unit is a regional centre that takes patients who require liver transplantation, management of acute liver failure and who have complex hepato biliary surgery. Patient come from across the country, and require holistic approach to met their and their families needs. You will work closely with the physicians, surgeons and multi disciplinary advocating for the patients.
You will be involved in teaching transplants patients about self care and medication for them to start their new journey.
Communication is a key skill with our patients who are often a long way from home with limited visitors .
