Job summary

As our new Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, you will lead our ambition that equality and equity of access is a thread throughout all that we do. You will champion new ways of thinking, delivering services and hearing the voices of our people and local population to improve equitable, diverse and inclusive experiences for all.

There is lots to do. Our Board, Executive team and Culture and Inclusion Board will work alongside you to effect change. We are building a stronger values-led culture, and we are prioritising staff welfare and wellbeing, engendering a greater sense of belonging. You will lead this important area, and engage and respectfully challenge leaders to continually act with compassion and inclusion.

With a focus on caring for our staff and 'getting the basics right' there is also a strong focus on improving, enhancing, and developing our culture through transformational change. A trusted source of professional advice and expertise, you will develop and act upon specialist knowledge in current trends in EDI.

You will drive forward civility, respect, individuality, collectiveness and belonging in a workplace that ensures equality, delivers diversity and inspires inclusivity.

You will live and breathe our values of being kind, connected and bold, and hold others to account to be inclusive, fair and supportive.

Main duties of the job

The Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is a new role. You will be an inspirational and experienced leader who can accelerate our EDI progress by introducing fresh impetus and best practice to our efforts.

You will demonstrate effectiveness in leading diversity and inclusion-related programmes that will deliver lasting and meaningful change for our people.

The role provides strategic and operational direction and leadership in relation to equality, diversity and human rights legislation. You will provide evidence-based, strategic direction to the Trust Board and Executive Team, ensuring strong levels of Trust-wide engagement, and a continued focus on this agenda at all levels, to develop the cultural conditions for dynamic ED&I leadership and cultural change across UHB.

You will work with the Executive Team and corporate and clinical leaders to ensure our workforce reflects the communities, service users and patients we serve. Core to the role will be ensuring that equality, diversity and inclusion is a key theme running through all workforce strategies and work streams, and integral to all systems, processes and behaviours.

Working collaboratively with staff networks will be central to your approach, listening to diverse voices and ensuring equitable and inclusive engagement in the co-creation of diverse & inclusive ways of working.

You will anticipate and get ahead of EDI-related challenges and opportunities, shaping and delivering strategies and practices.

  • *Minimum of degree level with either a Masters degree or equivalent level experience.

  • *Evidence of post-graduate development in a relevant work area.
  • *It is desirable to have a coaching/mentoring qualification.

  • *A proven track-record of delivering EDI transformation.
  • *Large scale project management experience, in EDI developments.

  • *Proven track record of formulating impactful long term strategic plans.
  • *Robust knowledge of legislation and EDI law to provide specialist authoritative advice for the Trust, advising on discriminatory behaviours.
  • *Policy implementation across function or corporate responsibility for EDI policy.
  • *Experience of delivering, leading and embedding inclusive change initiatives, with an understanding of the dynamics of change and the effects on people
  • *Demonstrable experience of managing and developing a diversity and inclusion roadmap focused on achieving measurable and sustainable results.
  • *It is desirable to have broader sector experience, including for example social care or education.
