Job summary

Applications are invited for Band 2 Healthcare Assistant (HCA) Posts on the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) which is part of Acute Medicine at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Successful applicants will join a dynamic team in one of the most innovative Acute Medical Areas.

Acute Medicine at BHH manages a vibrant MAU with 59 assessment beds/trollies in which we aim to assess, treat and either admit or discharge our patients within 12-24 hours.

We are a friendly, experienced team who are looking for enthusiastic, hardworking individuals with a passion for caring, to join us as an HCA.

We are committed to developing our staff to reach their full potential and have various training opportunities available. You will be required to complete the Care Certificate if you have not already done so. You will be supported in doing this.

MAU is a very busy and dynamic area to work.

We strongly recommend that you make contact with the Managers to discuss the role. Informal visits also recommended.

Main duties of the job

The Health Care Assistant role on MAU is revolved around providing high quality patient centred care.

This includes personal care, recording observations, assisting with nutritional needs and escorting patients to other wards and departments, completing electronic patient charts for which you will be trained to do.

The post holder will have direct contact with members of the public and so will require excellent communication skills.

Due to the acute and busy environment, the post holder will need to be able to work well under pressure.

Patients are referred to MAU by either GP's or the emergency department for medical assessment. It is a dynamic busy area with a fast turnover of patients and is supported by a Matron and Senior Sisters. The workload within MAU is varied and different day to day.
