Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor in Sexual Health and HIV Services. This is a 10 PA post.
The Department runs clinical sessions Monday to Thursday (09:00--19:00) Friday (09:00 -- 17:00) Saturday (10:00 -- 16:00).
The post holder will be one of the doctors managing HIV patients (in and outpatients setting, based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), as well as GU medicine and integrated sexual health clinics based at Whittall Street Clinic in Birmingham City Centre, and various satellite clinics.
The post is full-time and does not include on-call for HIV patients. The post holder is expected to undertake clinical sessions, comprising GUM clinics within the Umbrella Sexual Health service and HIV and HTLV clinics at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. This includes evening clinical sessions during the weekdays (till 7pm).
The successful candidate is expected to participate in the Saturday rota on a pro-rota basis. Time off in lieu will be given.
The Doctor will be supervised by a consultant physician and will also be responsible to the Clinical Service Leads.
Main duties of the job
Working in accordance with GMC's Good Clinical Practice.
HIV infected patients attending for routine clinic follow up. Review and discussion of their laboratory results, assessment of adherence to antiretroviral medications, assessment and management of patient's complaints and counselling patients for health life style including smoking cessation, reduction in alcohol consumption and cessation of use of recreational substances. Prescription of antiretroviral medications, vaccines and treatments for sexually transmitted infections where applicable. All clinical visits should be documented in the Trust's electronic systems and accompanied by dictation of a clinical summary.
Management of HIV infected patients with abnormal renal, liver, haematology, imaging or pathology results; and microorganisms identified by the medical microbiology laboratory.
Management of patients with HTLV infection as part of a multi-disciplinary outpatient team
Sexual Health clinics. Obtaining full sexual history including obstetrics and gynaecology histories where applicable. Screening and management of sexually transmitted infections -- offering integrated (RSH and GUM) care to clients according to the national and local guidelines.
