Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join the Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre (MD-TEC) team, part of Research Development and Innovation at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. MD-TEC is a research infrastructure, supporting the development and testing of novel medical devices within the NHS and wider healthcare sector. The MD-TEC Team is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Project Research Officer with an interest in patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) to contribute both to the project management and scientific aspects of projects within the MD-TEC West Midlands Health Technology Innovation Accelerator (WMHTIA) portfolio. Patient and public involvement brings a breadth of insight, experience, knowledge and skills, and ensures that technology development is shaped by the patients and the public who will be using the technology, in order to ensure it is needed, usable, acceptable and fit for purpose.

Working with companies especially small and medium enterprises (SME) MD-TEC supports businesses through the complex regulatory process for medical devices by completing human factors usability testing, device functionality testing, health economic analyses, and patient and public involvement work. The post holders will co-ordinate a number of these activities for multiple projects within the programme at the same time.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a key member of the team and report day-day to the Programme Manager. The role involves working independently, undertaking specific administrative and financial responsibilities, acquired through developed knowledge relating to medical device research processes. This post supports Senior NHS Clinicians and Academics and company partners to successfully apply for clinical research grants and deliver clinical and non-clinical device usability studies. Specifically this involves draft completion of complicated external funding applications for research studies; supporting PPIE strategy and action planning and ensuring compliance with requirements for individual funding bodies and all relevant stakeholders. The post holder will be responsible for overall project management of studies including the planning, co-ordination and project delivery, including associated ethics and governance requirements. They will be expected to produce written reports/papers and presentations to communicate updates on study progress and findings.

The post holder must demonstrate excellent communication skills, which facilitate working in partnership with other teams within R D&I and wider UHB, but also with external organisations (e.g. University and commercial partners).
