Job summary

UHB is undergoing significant organisational change and cultural transformation, led by the newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Brotherton, who is now looking for a Group Chief Operating Officer to further develop our operating model to ensure it really works for the wider organisation, our colleagues, and our patients.

With significant change and challenge comes great opportunity. This is a really exciting career-defining time to be joining us, to be part of a major improvement programme that has leaders serving the needs and best interests of our patients, communities and colleagues. The Group Chief Operating Officer is not your typical COO role: we are taking it to new and higher levels. This is not about day-to-day operational leadership as this is devolved to Deputy COOs and Hospital Leaders; instead, this role oversees complex and interconnected hospital and community-based delivery within a wider Integrated Care System, aligned to a shared and common group strategy, within a psychologically safe and inclusive culture in which performance for our patients is achieved through caring for and valuing our people delivering services.

Apply online via CV and supporting statement. To discuss the opportunity further contact:

Stephen Glenn on 07733 668491 stephen.glenn2@uhb.nhs.uk

Helen Cant on 07989 959008 helen.cant@uhb.nhs.uk

We have an ambition to increase diversity at board level and welcome applications from individuals from under-represented groups.

Main duties of the job

The Group COO is responsible for the performance management and delivery framework under which the corporate and operational priorities are achieved through our group of hospitals and corporate services.

You will be an enabler of truly integrated care giving people more control over their own health and care and being an enabler to more collaboration between hospital sites within the Group and with system providers across health and social care.

You will translate strategic transformation and improvement priorities set out in the NHS Long Term Plan, the Trust Strategy and the strategy of Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board into operational service transformation and patient care improvements. Linked to this, the Group COO will be responsible for the implementation and iterations of the new group operating model.

The focus will be to continue to provide safe and effective care, focusing on our local hospitals and services, building a values-led culture and supporting our staff. All of this will need to be delivered in line with an unnerving willingness to assume responsibility, manage ambiguity and be comfortable with accountability commensurate with such a senior role.

As a member of the Group Executive Team, the Group COO shares corporate responsibility for a positive, inclusive work environment where people want to come to work, in a place that they are proud to work in, to do their very best for our patients.

Our commitment to an inclusive culture is embedded at all levels of the organisation where every voice is heard, driven by our diverse and active staff networks, and at Board level by the Fairness Taskforce led by our CEO. We nurture a culture which empowers staff to challenge discriminatory behaviours and to enable people to bring their 'whole self' to a kinder, more connected and bold place to work.
