Job summary
The Pharmacy Department at UHB are currently looking for fourteen Pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians to begin a vocational training programme in September 2023, based at either the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital or Solihull Hospital.
This is a fantastic opportunity for the post holder to not only work as part of a pharmacy team, but to also learn the key functions of a pharmacy technician role under the guidance and support of pharmacy professionals. You will attend Walsall College one day a week to complete the Open Awards Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians (RQF).
The posts are full time fixed term contracts for 2 years commencing in September or October 2023. Upon successful completion you will register with the the GPhC. The salary for this training post is Band 4 Annex 21 17,602 to 18,860 p.a and you will receive 27 days annual leave per year plus Bank Holidays.

Main duties of the job
With guidance and support from pharmacy professionals you will learn and perform the duties of a qualified pharmacy technician. You will obtain and demonstrate competencies in the dispensary through to stores, distribution, medicines optimisation and the wards. This includes dispensing medication for patients, procurement and stock control, to carrying out drug histories for hospital inpatients, plus much more.
Pharmacy Technicians are vital members of the pharmacy team and contribute greatly in today's NHS healthcare team. It is an exciting time to join the profession as the role of a Pharmacy Technician is becoming more varied and complex as medicines become increasingly sophisticated. Career opportunities for a Pharmacy Technician post qualification include, medicines management roles, manufacturing, quality control, staff training, information technology, supplies procurement, clinical trials or medicines information services and managing staff and sections within the Pharmacy Department.
Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technicians need to be able to work in a systematic and accurate manner and to have good numeracy skills. They also need to be able to communicate well with people and previous experience in a pharmacy or other health care setting would be desirable but is not essential. Strong organisational and time management skills are essential to ensure the successful achievement of the Diploma whilst working under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
