Job summary

Applications are invited for a Junior Specialist Doctor (Standard) to join the dynamic team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) to work within Haematology or Oncology which is a combined on-call rota.

The successful candidate will be part of the trust wide JSD programme; for inpatient care this is based predominantly at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB) site and the appointee will participate in the management of patients on the wards, day unit and other units as required. The post holder may rotate through all areas of the speciality and laboratory experience, including to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

UHB Haematology has recently reconfigured, following the merger of UHB and HEFT. The department delivers high-quality tertiary specialised services to the West Midlands region including Level 3 & 4 stem cell transplantation, CAR-T cell therapy, teenage and young adult (TYA) cancer care, apheresis, Comprehensive Haemophilia Centre, specialist integrated haematological malignancy diagnostic service (siHMDS) and a nationally recognised active academic programme; inpatient care is based principally at the QEHB site, which has 60 inpatient beds and there is an additional dedicated Young Persons Unit for TYA care.

Main duties of the job

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest regional centres for non-surgical cancer treatment. It has established links with surrounding cancer units and we accept referrals from the whole of the British Isles and from overseas.

The Cancer Centre has 19 consultant oncologists offering a high degree of sub-specialisation by tumour site. Consultant medical oncologists are specialists in delivering treatment for cancer or the side effects of cancer by prescribing medicines. Consultant clinical oncologists also prescribe radiotherapy. The consultants work within a professional and established team to provide the best possible care to patients, their families and carers.

Our Cancer Centre also has a special cancer information centre, the Patrick Room, which provides details of symptoms and treatments of specific cancer.

The principle responsibility of this post will be the routine care of Oncology patients under supervision from the Registrars and Consultants. He/She will share responsibilities for the care of patients, with special emphasis on history-taking and medical management. Day to day contact-liaison with the relevant medical, nursing and technical departments is necessary.
