Job summary
Applications are warmly invited for the posts of Locum Consultant Nephrologist at UHB. UHB is the largest single NHS provider of nephrology care in the UK with a catchment population of 1.7 million, serving a highly diverse community, including areas with some of the highest incident and prevalent rates for end-stage renal disease in the UK. There are two hubs for renal medicine located at QE and Heartlands Hospital. We deliver comprehensive renal services across the city as well as regionally and are committed to providing patient care and professional development of the highest standards.
UHB is the largest kidney transplant centre in the region, performing over 200 kidney transplants per annum.
The successful applicants will contribute to clinical service delivery and development as a member of a dynamic team of 31 consultant nephrologists. This post will have two main components: (i) rotation through in-patient services, (ii) the delivery of kidney disease care, including out-patient clinics, dialysis patient management and potentially procedural sessions.
These posts are appointed initially for 12 months and is based primarily at Queen Elizabeth or Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Inpatient duties are focused in Nephrology, but will also include the care of General Medical patients based on our wards. Ample opportunities exist for the appointee to develop sub-speciality interests, including peritoneal dialysis and highly specialist outpatient clinics.
Main duties of the job
Successful candidates will join clinical teams based at one of our 2 sites. Both sites include multiple inpatient wards, inpatient dialysis (both HD and PD), as well as on-site outpatient dialysis units. We also operate an extensive network of 13 satellite dialysis units. Outpatient activity occurs throughout out network, including a range of regional and national sub-speciality clinics. Appointees to QE have the opportunity to gain exposure to acute transplantation, whilst BHH appointees will have the opportunity to gain skills in medical PD catheter placement and the regional hypertension service.
Both posts are designed to give Locum colleagues wide ranging experience to develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and personal attributes to be successful at substantive Consultant interviews. This will include both in- and out-patients, dialysis (either HD or PD) and on-call duties. Other components will be tailored to the joint needs of the service and applicant. Research opportunities exist at both sites.
Discussion is welcomed both prior to application and interview, with visits to UHB warmly encouraged for shortlisted candidates.
