Job summary

The Central and South Genomic Medicine Service Alliance in collaboration with NHSE and Cancer Alliances have an exciting opportunity for a nurse to work across the CAS geography in conjunction with the lead for Lynch Syndrome.

The Central and South GMSA aim to improve significantly the diagnosis and management of Lynch Syndrome, one of the most common cancer predisposition syndromes 0.1% of the UK population.

Lynch Syndrome causes a variety of cancers, the most common being endometrial and colorectal. Early identification of patients with Lynch Syndrome is vital and screening for Lynch syndrome via mismatch repair Immunohistochemistry or MSI testing is now in the NICE guidelines for multiple cancers and a strategic priority for NHS England.

Across the geography there are a number of pilot Familial Cancer Clinics whereby patients identified with Lynch Syndrome by the GLH are referred for management of their condition and enrolment into a comprehensive screening programme The appointed clinical nurse specialist will help develop and embed transformative Lynch testing pathways across the geography, in conjunction with the regional MDT Lynch Champions and Lynch Syndrome Transformation Project Working Group, with support from the regional GMSA Nursing team.

The role would be ideal for a cancer clinical nurse specialist who is passionate about improving care for this previously under-identified group and would work with these patients to ensure they receive timely care.

Main duties of the job

*Raising awareness, disseminating information and supporting the integration of Lynch Syndrome testing and screening into routine clinical care with the aim of equal access to for all patients diagnosed with Lynch Syndrome.

*Aiding in an education programme for oncology and surgical MDTs to raise awareness of Lynch Syndrome, testing and screening.

*Providing support to the nominated link CNS at each spoke MDT to identify patients with Lynch Syndrome.

*Acting as an advocate for patients with Lynch Syndrome including:

*Identification of opportunities to positively impact diagnostic timelines and treatment pathways

*Adoption and dissemination of national guidance and documents

*Support of entry of eligible patients into approved research including clinical trials, subject to patients giving fully informed consent

*Appointees will be expected to keep a log of activities and regularly report the progress to GMSA team and also feedback about what is going well and what can be improved.

*Working across the C&S geography with leads to ensure optimal sharing of expertise and sharing of educational resources. Developing a plan for implementing extension of this model of working across the wider genomics consortium and adapting the chair role as these networks grow.
