Job summary

Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship - 3 year programme, commencing January 2026.

The Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship is a 3 year programe, working towarding becoming a Physysiothapist. You'll study for a BSc (Hons), validated by HCPC and accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherpay (CSP).

Course highlights:

As a Physiotherapy Apprentice you will be based as a paid employee with ECCH and based in one area where you will experience working accross both internal and external placements to gain experience, knowledge and appreciation of the different areas accross the local healthcare service. You will complete 1,000 hours of placements during your apprenticeship. These placements are an essential part of your learning. It'll give you the experience you need to qualify and thrive in your future career. They count towards your off-the-job training and are fully included in your training plan.

Main duties of the job

To assist qualified therapists in the delivery of the physiotherapy service to a specified caseload of inpatients

To work without direct supervision, undertaking tasks that fall within the remit of the non-complex patient. This can include frontline initial assessments

To routinely act as first contact with the non-complex patient

To carry own caseload of non-complex patients, devising and implementing treatment programmes with reference to a qualified therapist

Assisting qualified physiotherapy staff with the assessment of complex cases and ongoing management

Job responsibilities

Clinical

To work without direct supervision but under the direction of the qualified staff in the performance of specific tasks for an individual or group of patients, as part of their treatment and rehabilitation programmes. Duties may include:

o Implementation of treatment plans

o Positioning and seating advice

o Assessing performance of activities of daily living

o Teaching use of walking aids

o Independently evaluating and progressing patients therapy plans

o Carrying own caseload of non-complex patients including decisions on discharge

o Access home assessments

o Discharging patients on own caseload

o Delivery and fitting of simple equipment

o Direct assistance to qualified staff with more complex patients

o Demonstrating tasks/exercises to carers/family

o Onward referral. Signpost to external agencies and organisations

To be involved in the induction, training, development and supervision of students and therapy/rehabilitation assistants.

To write treatment notes in a concise, accurate and timely manner in line with departmental standards. These notes do not require qualified staff countersignature.

To be aware at all times of the needs of patients during illness or disability and to promote and encourage independence and restoration of function.

To undertake any non-clinical/clerical duties as necessary. This may include maintaining stock levels, filing, dealing with telephone calls, cleaning, booking transport.

To be actively involved in the communication of information regarding patients conditions and any other useful information to the physiotherapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

To communicate effectively with patients and carers. Communication skills of persuasion, motivation and explanation will be needed. Barriers to communication may include loss of hearing, altered perception, pain and language disorders.

To be involved in the delivery, collection, cleaning and maintenance of therapy equipment.

Working alongside ward staff in delivering personal care, i.e. before, during and after treatment sessions with duties such as toileting/washing.

Organisational

To work in accordance with the relevant Physiotherapy Codes of Conduct.

To be aware of and comply with organisational policies and procedures.

To be aware of the Health and Safety aspects of your work and abide by policies including the prompt recording and documentation of incidents and accidents.

Any other duties that may be considered appropriate by the qualified staff or Integrated Therapies Clinical Lead.

To ensure that services are provided in accordance with the organisations standards, procedures and objectives of quality assurance, and that they are consistent with best practice.

To contribute to the evaluation of the service through use of audit, outcome measures and where appropriate support in the implementation of these.

Skills/Knowledge

To actively participate in the ECCHs appraisal process and have a positive approach to continual professional development.

The post-holder will demonstrate skills and knowledge beyond that of a Therapy Assistant. These skills and knowledge will be gained through specific advanced training, experience or formal qualifications.

To meet the academic and clinical requirements of the occupational therapy degree apprenticeship programme as defined both by the university and the organisation.
