Nursing Degree Apprenticeship - 2 year program, commencing October 2025

The Nursing Degree Apprenticeship is a 2 year program, working towards become a Registered Nurse with a BSc Hons Degree. The course combines work-based and academic learning between East Coast Community Healthcare (ECCH) and the UEA who are approved to deliver Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved programs and is also a Registered Apprenticeship Training Provider.

As a Nursing Degree Apprentice you will be based as a paid employee with ECCH and based in one area where you will experience working across both internal and external placements to gain experience, knowledge and appreciation of the different areas across the local healthcare service whilst meeting the NMC requirements.

Main duties of the job

The Apprentice will:

Successfully complete and pass the academic elements of the program as specified by ECCH, UEA and Institute of Apprenticeship standards.

Successfully complete the nursing competencies related to NMC standards as specified by ECCH and the University

Work with a mentor, taking responsibility for developing your own nursing competence while on placements and attending academic study; maintaining evidence of your learning

Work as part of a designated clinical team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient

Deliver effective care following treatment plans determined by the Registered Nurse or registered care professional and provide feedback on progress against the plans.

Demonstrate a flexible and dynamic attitude, both to your paid work and academic studies

Plan and manage competing demands of job role, study and placement activities

Demonstrate inter-personal skills that promote clarity, compassion, empathy, respect and trust

Work in an effective and organised manner demonstrating excellent time management and organisational skills to effectively deliver person-centred care for an allocated group of individuals

According to these standards you will be required to complete 2,300 hours equally divided between theory and practice as off the job training. You will also be required to complete an apprentice portfolio that demonstrates learning and skills and complete an end point assessment.

Work with a mentor, taking responsibility for developing your own nursing competence while on placements and attending academic study; maintaining evidence of your learning

Report any accidents or incidents and raise any concerns as per organisational policy

Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrongdoing

Exercise personal responsibility and work under supervision of a Registered Nurse and within defined parameters of practice, taking the initiative in a variety of situations and performing a range of clinical and care skills consistent with the role, responsibilities and professional values of an Apprentice Nurse.

Ensure that only those activities for which competence has been achieved are undertaken without supervision and that recognition is given to the impact and consequences of practising outside capability.

Specific Duties

  • Perform and record clinical observations including blood pressure, temperature, respirations, pulse, behavioural observations, mental health observations
  • Accurately record nutritional and fluid intake
  • Undertake clinical tasks including wound care, administration of medication including subcutaneous, oral and rectal, catheter/bowel care and management, blood glucose monitoring, oral suctioning and any other clinical intervention that is competency based and listed for a Nurse Apprentice
  • Support service users/patients with all aspects of care including daily living, providing person-centred care and promoting health and independence through awareness raising and care navigation to other professionals as appropriate
  • Ensure the privacy, dignity and safety of patients is maintained at all times
  • Assist in the implementation of appropriate action to meet the specific physical, emotional and psychological, social, cultural and spiritual needs of individuals and carers
  • Assist in the delivery of complex care as prescribed.
  • Exercise personal responsibility and work independently within defined parameters of practice, taking the initiative in a variety of situations and performing a range of clinical and care skills consistent with the role, responsibilities and professional values of a Nursing Degree Apprentice
