We are looking
for an enthusiastic and motivated dentist to join Plymouth
Community Dental Service, part of Livewell Southwest (LSW). LSW is an award-winning provider of NHS services in Plymouth and the
surrounding community in South Hams and West Devon. As an organisation Livewell
Southwest is gaining national and international attention for the work that it
does, providing a unique and growing range of services in the Southwest of
England.
This post is a
developmental position, providing access to training across all
disciplines within a salaried service setting of special care, oral surgery, paediatrics and urgent care. As the largest NHS dental provider in
Plymouth, our service is large enough to make your work variable and
interesting, yet still small enough to make the experience of working here
personal to you. This role will also
include full sedation training.
You will be
part of a specialist led, caring and committed team providing high quality
dental care to local people with a range of dental needs, as well as
paediatrics and urgent care. This
includes the provision of general anaesthetic and sedation services. A positive approach is essential as well as
the ability to strike a rapport with people who may find dental services
daunting. Our service offers and excellent clinical working environment with a
range of bespoke clinical equipment and computerised clinical information
system.
Main duties of the job
The post holder
will have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities and undertaken
by Plymouth Community Dental Services Ltd.
This
encompasses services for patients with a wide variety of special needs
(including medically compromised), children, dental phobics, paediatrics,
patients requiring minor oral surgery (MOS) and urgent care for those members
of the community who have been unable to access treatment with an NHS General
Dental Practitioner.
You will be encouraged to develop skills under the guidance of Specialist clinicians
in MOS, Special Care and Paediatrics and undertake further training in conscious sedation and GA exodontia.
This is an
ideal role for a clinician wishing to experience a range of dental disciplines
and undertake training and development within a salaried service setting.

Job responsibilities
The following list reflects typical duties that the post holder could be expected to undertake. This is not an exhaustive list, and may be subject to change, by mutual agreement, in order to meet the changing needs and requirements of the service.
Full training and support will be provided where required.
- To provide oral health care for adults and children with disabilities and additional needs including those who are medically compromised.
- To provide comprehensive high quality oral healthcare under local anaesthesia and behaviour management and if competence appropriate also with sedation and general anaesthesia as required. To understand and demonstrate all aspects of pain and anxiety management particularly for patients with additional needs.
- To work collaboratively with primary and secondary care dental colleagues.
- To maintain up to date knowledge and skills on clinical techniques and their application to patient dental care.
- To provide clinical advice to staff or other health care workers on dental matters as appropriate.
- To undertake dental extractions carried out under General Anaesthetic in a hospital.
- Liaison with other dental care providers including within the CDS/GDS and Hospital services.
- Administration associated with these duties including timely completion of appropriate NHS forms and referrals
- Provision of services on more than one site as dictated by service requirements.
- Recognise and assist with management of medical emergencies within the dental surgery.
- Have a comprehensive knowledge of service emergency drugs protocol and competence for use in medical emergencies.
- To comply with all the Dental Service clinical policies, including IRMER, Health & Safety requirements, Infection Control, Data Protection and other legislation or procedures relevant to the safe practice of dentistry for both patients and staff.
- To comply with locally developed Standard Operating Procedures for the Dental Service.
- To undertake training as required by the service and as needed to maintain standards of clinical practice and as required to ensuring continuing registration with the General Dental Council.
- To take part in all aspects of clinical governance, including peer review and clinical supervision. The post holder will be expected to take part in clinical audit.
- To take part in personal development and appraisal.
- Undertake appropriate Continuing Professional Development relevant to the requirements of the service.
- This post involves working with children and vulnerable adults and will require a DBS check.
- Maintain a safe working environment complying with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, the Care Quality Commission and the policies of Livewell Southwest
