Job summary

37.5 hours per week. At the Glenbourne Unit we are actively recruiting motivated and professional Band 5 Mental Health or Learning Disability Nurses, including Preceptor Nurses, who are looking to work in our Outstanding rated Male and Female Acute Ward as awarded by the Care Quality Commission. Harford Ward is a 19 bedded Male Acute Ward and Bridford Ward is a 19 bedded Female Acute Ward.

Here at the Glenbourne we received an overall rating of outstanding, and we are one of only a few units of its kind to achieve this rating within the UK.

The unit was praised in particular for the compassionate care provided by staff, noting the 2015 mental health inpatient survey that rated nurses at the Glenbourne unit the highest in the country for treating patients with dignity and respect.

Main duties of the job

The postholder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

You will be designated to take charge regularly of the ward.

The postholder is required to supervise staff and be able to teach qualified and unqualified staff, including basic and / or post basic students.

The staff nurse will at all times work within the spirit of the NMC code of Professional Conduct for trained nurses and local policies.

You will need to have a passion for working with people with mental health needs and possess excellent communication skills as you will be alongside other professionals, families and carers.

Organise the provision of care and act as Named Nurse / Associate Nurse for a specified group of patients.

To function as a member of a multi disciplinary team taking appropriate responsibility for the implementation of decisions made by the team

Ensure planned nursing care is implemented and evaluated, take appropriate action in the light of evaluation.

Participate in training programmes for both trained and untrained staff

In conjunction with the university and Senior Staff Nurses ensure training programmes / objectives for learner nurses are implemented.

To be responsible for implementing drug administration procedures according to laid down policy.

Maintain standards of care to highest level within available resources.

Maintain confidentiality in respect to the patient at all times

To actively participate in line management with senior and junior members of staff.

To liaise effectively with other wards and services. To develop and maintain relationships with providers statutory and non-statutory

To maintain confidentiality in respect of the patient / client at all times.

Communicate clearly with patients, their families and all other mental health professional groups about their health problems and care plan.

Actively participate in clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives, eg. clinical audit, essence of care or clinical policy development.

Play an active role in PCF multi disciplinary reviews and ward rounds, reporting on the nursing assessment of the patients progress and participating further in multi disciplinary care planning.

Ensure that patients are encouraged to play a part in the Care Plan and to sign it; and ensuring they receive a copy of it. This is to promote person centred planning

Participate in the Glenbourne wide response team which responds to any untoward incident and undertake associated training.

Provide mentorship for students

Attend and participate in meetings ie. Case Conference, Mental Health review tribunals
