Job summary

37.5 hours per week. The Lee Mill Low Secure Unit is a 12-bed male inpatient ward set in the small village of Lee Mill just outside of Plymouth. We provide specialist mental health care for men who have often been involved in the legal system due to their mental health difficulties. The staff at Lee Mill are passionate about providing the highest level of patient centred care to an often challenging and disadvantaged patient group.

The Lee Mill team has recently been the recipients of the Mary Seacole Peoples award which has celebrated our dedication to promote recovery and work collaboratively with our patient group, the kindness and respect demonstrated by the team and the high number of successful discharges out of secure care.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic OT to join our successful and highly motivated team. We will offer a comprehensive and supportive programme with access to further training and experience with good promotion prospects within the team. The team receive regular supervision and support from psychological services along with continuing professional development training including essential training for staff working within secure services.

Due to the nature of the role, all staff are required to attend a physical interventions training session to ensure we can meet the needs of our patients and remain effective in maintaining the safety and wellbeing of all. This post covers a 24/7 shift pattern.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible to the Lead OT for the provision of Occupational Therapy through Assessment, implementation and evaluation of treatment programmes within agreed Care Programme Approach, for patients within Lee Mill.

To promote patient centred care for Adult patients with severe and enduring mental health needs and Learning Disabilities.

To carry out group and individual interventions within Lee Mill and in the community wherever treatment will be most effective, utilising a range of treatment techniques within the areas of cognitive, psychological and physical functioning, self-care, productivity and leisure needs.

1. CLINICAL

1.1 To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, maintaining good clinical liaison with health and non-statutory care providers, attending all relevant meetings.

1.2 To provide the full range of Occupational Therapy assessments, treatment interventions and evaluation in accordance with identified needs within an Occupational Therapy framework.

1.3 To act as Named Occupational Therapist for designated patients within Lee Mill and those that are outreached.

1.4 To carry out a range of individual and group based interventions using a range of treatment techniques as necessary under the supervision of the Lead OT and within the most appropriate setting.

1.5 To plan and execute occupationally therapeutic interventions over seven days as per low secure standards.

1.6 To record interventions, providing verbal and written reports under the supervision of the Lead OT in accordance with College of Occupational Therapy standards and agreed Care Programme Approach procedures.

1.7 To gain an understanding of Mental Health Act 1983 and other national/local policies and procedures.

1.8 To assist with the assessment of risk within the work environment and of individual patients.

1.9 To participate in local and professional Clinical Governance initiatives such as audit and use of evidence based practice.

1.10 To provide direction to technical Instructors, as necessary and as delegated by the Lead OT, in the implementation of the OT programme.

1.11 To develop and maintain effective communication systems and networks appropriate to the needs of the patients and the service in general.

1.12 To arrange for patients to access other mental health services and community resources as appropriate to the needs of the patients.

2 ADMINISTRATION

2.1 To ensure that contemporaneous, written and electronic records are maintained in accordance with Professional and PCHC standards including clinical notes, CPA and other relevant paperwork.

2.2 To be aware and handle unit petty cash and patients money in accordance with unit policies.

2.3 To take responsibility for other unit administration tasks as directed by unit manager.

3 PROFESSIONAL

3.1 To be individually accountable for maintaining standards of own practice in accordance with the Occupational Therapy and HCPC Codes of Professional Conduct and PCHC policies and procedures.

3.2 To actively participate in Clinical / Professional / Line Management Supervision and regular Appraisals.

3.3 To attend relevant profession meetings as necessary e.g. Band 5 support group, and Occupational Therapy Forum

3.4 To participate in clinical governance activities within clinical area e.g. clinical audit and use of evidence based practice.

3.5 To contribute to the development of the Occupational Therapy Service within Lee Mill, under the supervision of the Lead OT.

4 EDUCATIONAL

4.1 To participate in multi and uni professional teaching programmes for staff.

4.2 To ensure continuing professional development continues in keeping with job and personal requirements.

4.3 To attend all mandatory training as required.

5 STATEMENT ON CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The responsibility for engaging in CPD activity and for producing and maintaining a professional portfolio ultimately lies with the individual. The Line manager / Professional Lead have responsibility to ensure that Occupational Therapist have the opportunity to undertake CPD activities and document them effectively.

Plymouth Community Healthcare will support the Occupational Therapy profession with their continuing development activity through the professional supervision and appraisal process.

The individual professional should endeavour to take advantage of training and other CPD opportunities that the PCHC offers. Training and CPD needs should be clearly identified by the individual when developing the Personal Development Plan in the appraisal process.
