2. Job Purpose
To provide a Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service to pre/ school or school aged children as required in the Royal Borough of Kingston-Upon-Thames. .
To achieve better outcomes for children and families by identifying difficulties and by contribution to the joint identification, joint decision making, and joint planning and joined up preparation for school and the continued acquisition of life skills
To respond to urgent / income generated pieces of work
3. Dimensions
To provide a Speech and Language Therapy service to children in homes, clinics, pre-school settings/ mainstream or Special Schools as required
To contribute to the evidencebase of clinical effectiveness for interventions and strategies that support childrens SLCN and / or eating, drinking and swallowing (EDS) needs
To complete requested pieces of work within the specified timeframe
To be able to manage your workload independently with support when required
To deliver in accordance with the Balanced System .
4. Key Result Areas/Principle responsibilities
Patient/client care:
To have a specialist knowledge and understanding of the strengths and needs of children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in order to support their developing skills.
To assess, differentially diagnose, interpret results, and/or implement therapy programmes for children with SLCN and / or EDS difficulties
To provide support and advice to significant others e.g. parents, teaching staff and support staff as appropriate in the delivery of the service, to encourage opportunities for communication development and reinforcement of newly acquired skills are carried over into everyday life.
To monitor, review and measure the children's progress according to their (speech language and Therapy (SLT) plans and to modify these as appropriate.
To provide training, in conjunction with SLT colleagues, in pre-school / mainstream or Special Schools, or for families, as required.
To be aware of legal requirements relating to the provision of a speech and language therapy service.
To submit, as required, formal advice for Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) so as to fulfil the Teams statutory duties.
To have an awareness of issues around delivery of service in education, National Curriculum and SEND Code of Practice.
To contribute to annual reviews in order to provide updated information, as required
To ensure children and young people are referred to other services as part of their ongoing care.
Policy/service development and implementation:
To contribute to reflective clinical practice both individually and with peers identifying strengths and needs to support the teams development of the current evidence base and to support effective clinical decision making.
To use specialist knowledge to inform service/policy developments as appropriate.
To advise the Team Lead on issues of service delivery including shortfall, service pressures.
To contribute to innovations in areas of risk management, quality standards and clinical effectiveness in conjunction with peers and supervisors in order to ensure a safe, effective and efficient service.
To contribute to the development of projects and therapy offer in liaison with Team Leads in order to improve outcomes for children.
To demonstrate an awareness of the issues associated with clinical governance, including adherence to policies, guidelines and professional standards.
To develop and maintain clinical expertise, consulting with other Speech and Language Therapists as necessary, keeping up to date with new techniques and developments, for the promotion and maintenance of good practice and your own personal and professional development as evidenced by Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
To use speech and language therapy plans and outcome measures e.g. TOMs, and contributing to the collating of outcome measurement data
Financial and physical resources:
To oversee the maintenance of speech and language therapy equipment and resources used in clinical service areas and advise Manager of equipment needs.
To develop specialist resources for use in therapy
- To adhere to financial arrangements for specific pieces of Bank work. Your job role may involve delivering a service as a result from a paying customer. You will need to have an appreciation of the cost of service delivery in relation to customer/service resource.
Human resources:
To provide support and supervision to speech and language therapists, SLT assistants, assistants within educational settings and volunteers as required.
To provide training for staff, parents and colleagues on a range of topics to support the development of the Children and Young Peoples SLCN and colleagues professional development, as required
Information resources:
To maintain childrens clinical notes in line with the RCSLT, HCPC and Your Healthcares Professional Standards and Policies.
To carry out administrative duties including data collection; arranging appointments and maintaining general equipment.
Research and development:
To contribute to audits to inform the evidence base for clinical effectiveness in SLT
To assist in the delivery of teaching programmes for speech and language therapists and other professionals and to evaluate the effectiveness of the training provided in collaboration with other colleagues, as required
Freedom to act / decision making:
To manage a defined case load, advising Team Lead of shortfalls or difficulties as they arise.
To negotiate with parents, teachers and assistants around individual case management and seek advice and support from Team Lead/supervisor as necessary.
To work flexibly in a range of environments, e.g. pre-school/schools/specialist provisions within the borough.
Communication and working relationships:
To attend supervision meetings organised for speech and language therapists in order to offer and receive support to ensure there is opportunity for reflective practice.
To attend meetings and in-service training as required.
To work effectively within multi and uni-disciplinary teams
To share information with other professionals to ensure effective case management.
To demonstrate the ability to negotiate and manage conflict when it occurs generating potential solutions, seeking advice is necessary.

Other Duties: to undertake any other duties as required by the Childrens Speech and Language Therapy Service Lead, which are commensurate with the duties of the current post and may include a change in workplace.
