Job summary

The NDS Nursing and Safeguarding Team are excited to offer a fixed term 12-month contract. Giving an excellent opportunity for a Nurse interested in developing their career in both areas of Nursing as well as gaining valuable community experience. This role would be well suited to an experienced Learning Disability (RNLD), Mental Health (RMN) or Adult Nurse (RGN) with special interest in Learning Disabilities, Adult Safeguarding and the Mental Capacity Act.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would act as an adult safeguarding advisor for Your Healthcare as a whole and a senior Nurse within the Learning Disability Nursing team across a whole-time equivalent post. This would mirror the Adult Safeguarding & NDS Nursing team lead who also works across both teams. Within safeguarding we work very closely with the Childrens Safeguarding Lead and Advisor and in LD Nursing we work within the wider Neurodevelopmental Service The Neurodevelopmental Service notably works across both the Royal Borough of Kingston and the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, whilst other YH services are based solely in Kingston.

In post the successful candidate will hold a Learning Disability Nursing caseload, hold supervisory responsibility and support the on-going development of the team. They will also hold a position on the safeguarding team, where they will be a point of advice and support for all YH staff regarding concerns associated to safeguarding and the implementation of the mental capacity act. The successful candidate with be involved in policy, audit and training within both teams. They will also participate in MARAC, VAMA, and the Safeguarding Partnership Board subgroups.

They will be supported to attend the necessary training to ensure their onward professional development.

2. Job Purpose

Learning Disability Nursing

To provide a high standard of skilled nursing input for people with learning disabilities in a range of settings (own home, residential care, supported living, hospital) in compliance with the relevant protocols and guidelines.

To co-ordinate for themselves and the team members a range of assessments and interventions for people with learning disabilities and complex health needs

Safeguarding

To support the professional lead for safeguarding adults across all Your Healthcare services, providing a high quality, evidence based service ensuring quality of care and safety of vulnerable adults. This includes being a source of expertise for the organisation and promoting excellent standards of professional practice in relation to safeguarding adults.

The scope of the post includes facilitating effective multi-disciplinary and interagency working, supporting changes in safeguarding service delivery and clinical practice.

To provide advice to staff teams and individual staff members regarding safeguarding concerns and issues related to the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act.

To collaborate with Managers and the Human Resources Department in conducting investigations of safeguarding adults related incidents and complaints.

To support the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards in practice.

To provide training in safeguarding and The Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty / Liberty Protection safeguards.

  • To support the development and implementation of safeguarding and MCA related audits and policy reviews.

Adult Safeguarding

To provide advice and support to all staff working with adults.

To facilitate the implementation and review of systems to ensure that staff are able to identify adults in need of safeguarding at an early stage, contribute to protection from harm and provide effective interventions for vulnerable adults where abuse has occurred.

  • To ensure the perspective of the vulnerable adult and the promotion of anti-discriminatory practice are incorporated into all aspects of safeguarding adults practice.

To prepare chronologies and reports to support completion of section 42 enquires, Serious Adult Reviews and internal management reviews, undertaking critical analysis of practice and the development of recommendations and action planning.

To provide support and facilitate debriefing for staff involved in complex safeguarding cases.

To support the development and implementation of strategies, plans, policies, procedures, relevant to Safeguarding Adult Services across the service which take account of national and local safeguarding policies.

To deputise for the adult safeguarding lead in relation to the work of the Kingston and Richmond/Wandsworth Safeguarding Adults Partnership Boards (SAB)and relevant subgroups.

To deputise for the adult safeguarding lead in regard to Kingston MARAC , VAMA , MAPPA or other specialist safeguarding groups in Kingston.

To establish and maintain effective liaison and working relationships with other areas of health, social services, police and the voluntary sector.

  • To collaborate with Managers and other organisations / agencies in risk-assessing cases which may pose a risk of harm to professionals, and to contribute to the development of risk strategies.
