Job responsibilities
Principal duties to include:
Implement key aspects of evidence-based practice.
Demonstrate clinical expertise and act as a professional role model to all staff, both internal
and external to CSH Surrey, working as part of a team and taking the lead to develop services
in line with the needs of the client.
Work as part of the multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team to provide a comprehensive and
co-ordinated range of support which improves or maintains the health, independence and
quality of life of children, young people and their families
Apply highly specialist knowledge and skills which are underpinned by advanced theoretical
and practical knowledge and experience.
Autonomously manage a caseload of children that enables sufficient time and practice
experience to support SCPHN student, this may include long arming students in an
adjacent borough.
Participate in the orientation and induction of new staff and promote good interpersonal
relationships within the team
Contribute to the pre and post registration learning opportunities made available to students
within CFHS, which may also include alternative practice placements or additional field of
practice opportunities for SCPHNS.
Complete annual team educational placement audits
Plan learning in conjunction with the university, student and other learners recognising
individuals particular needs, interests and learning styles
To hold responsibility for the assessment of clinical practice for SCPHN students within the
community
To facilitate and participate in a preceptor programme for newly qualified specialist
practitioners
Working with the clinical team lead and clinical service manager contribute to the clinical
management of the multi-professional team, and lead in the evaluation, planning and
development of service pathways in relation to effectiveness and best practice. This will
include line management, training, supervision and expert advice to other professionals and
parents.
Work as an integral part of the children and families multi-disciplinary team, and as a
specialist resource to other professionals and agencies.
Develop and participate in the team based continuous professional development (CPD)
activities and provide training for less experienced members of the team.
Provide formal and informal training and support to groups of health and education
professionals and support workers to promote and enhance patient care.
Lead on research to ensure and support the development of evidence based practice in your
specialism.
Initiate and maintain contacts with local and national clinical interest groups appropriate to
the clinical field and to share and disseminate knowledge with colleagues working within the
directorate.
Motivate team members to develop innovative ways to practice creating an environment in
which co-owners accept responsibility, authority and accountability for their actions.
Contribute to the delivery and provide specialist knowledge and advice to influence the
CFHS strategic agenda.
Actively seek, understand and apply national guidelines/legislation relating to health and
social care in the provision of childrens services.
Provide formal and informal safeguarding supervision for practitioners and maintain close
and effective links with the safeguarding team
Demonstrate an advanced in depth understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk
Propose &/or contribute to the development of policies & procedures for the Children and
Families Business unit.
Work in partnership with GP practices, nurseries, childrens centres, schools and other
agencies within area of responsibility in order to meet local and national objectives.
Ensure that the professional frameworks for nursing are incorporated into everyday
practice.
Professional responsibilities
Act in accordance with CFHS values, culture and behaviours and appropriate Professional
Codes of Conduct
Be registered in the same part of the register, i.e. SCPHN, and from the same field of
practice e.g. school nursing, health visiting, occupational health nursing (or relevant
SPQ where this is a local requirement) as the student they are to assess (see NMC
Circular 26/2007 Annexe 3).
Provide support to Clinical Team Leader in disseminating learning and new practice
developments to borough teams
Participate in the development of service for children and young people across CFHS
Support the teams through periods of change; ensuring skills of the individuals meets the
needs and expectations of both the profession and the modernisation agenda.
Provide support for the clinical service manager and other leaders as required.
Work with key personnel in health and other agencies to address and/or achieve agreed
local and government policies and targets.
Identify the individual potential in all co-owners within the team and support them through
effective annual professional development review processes.
In conjunction with the clinical team lead, co-ordinate the work of team members for this
speciality, ensuring that work is carried out safely, effectively and within recognised
competency skills. Ensure that all staff practice within their professional code of conduct.
Motivate team members to develop innovative ways to practice, creating an environment in

Be involved in the development of policies, guidelines and care pathways in relation to
clinical practice, working together with clients, other professionals within CFHS and partner
agencies.
Represent CFHS both locally and nationally as required ensuring the cascade of any
relevant information.
Raise the profile of Children and Family teams and their members, promoting the public
value of their work.
Communication skills (factor 1)
Communicate effectively with the Clinical Team Leader on all professional matters
Communicate effectively with the multi-disciplinary team to promote child safety and the
management of risk
Communicate highly sensitive &/or highly complex information to parents/carers and other
professionals in an excellent and professional manner.
Maintain accurate and contemporaneous electronic records in line with CFHS policy and
support co-owners to do likewise.
Work in partnership with the Safeguarding Team to promote the wellbeing of children and
young people, engaging with families and partner agencies to achieve this.
To establish robust links are set up for regular contact and effective communication with all
state schools and GP practices within the borough, to promote effective relationships and
an understanding of the 0-19 team
To contribute to negotiations with regard to 0-19 service provision with lead agencies
To develop effective ways of communicating with hard to reach groups
Analytical and judgemental skills (f3)
Able to understand complex family situations and respond and refer appropriately
Understand community health needs through data collection and locality profiles and
design interventions to meet local health needs
Work with the team managers to establish, implement and monitor systems that
measure clinical outcomes and evidence the need for change and improvements in the
service delivery in the given specialism
Ensure all aspects of risk management are reported
Analyse and interpret complex information and/or situations that may require
appropriate and timely responses including investigations, assessment and
safeguarding children.
Planning and organisational skills (f4)
Manage own time and work effectively to meet objectives and deadlines.
Challenge own and other behaviours in conjunction with CFHSs values in order to facilitate
change and improve services.
Sustain concentration at all meetings attended.
Adapt to the unpredictability of the workload, managing the frequent interruptions that may
require re-prioritisation of duties, tasks etc.
Lone working when in clinical practice.
Work in a variety of settings including office accommodation, schools, children centres,
clinics, GP practices and clients homes.
Regular requirement to drive own car for purposes of work
IT skills including spread sheets, databases, power point and electronic records.
Manual dexterity and accuracy when undertaking clinical and therapeutic procedures
appropriate to registration e.g. plotting measurements on centile charts, administering
injections, splinting.
Daily requirement to move and handle small loads e.g. weighing and measuring equipment,
manual manipulation of babies and small children, health promotion resources, in
community settings and to and from clients homes and therapeutic setting.
Be physically able to assess and treat in own area of specialism
Support the clinical team leader with the day to day management of all 0-19 staff within the
borough team, including appraisals, managing sickness, and workload allocation
To endeavour to provide adequate service cover at times of staff absence
Monitor quality of service provision and key performance indicators
Support and monitor teams adherence to organisation infection control policy
Policy and service development (f7)
Take an active role in driving forward local and national developments particularly in relation
to Children and Young People, working with partner agencies in identifying opportunities for
service improvements.
Contribute to the development of CFHS service specifications and to the development of
training and education programmes to support future workforce development.
