Job summary

Children and Family Health Surrey is made up of three partner organisations

CSH Surrey,

First Community Health and Care, and

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Together, we provide one Surrey-wide community health service for children and young people from 0 to 19 years of age (up to 25 years for young adults with additional needs) and their families and carers.

You will be working in the Early Years Speech and Language Therapy Service, in the North West of Surrey (Runnymede, Woking, Surrey Heath). You will have opportunities to meet up and discuss ideas with other members of the team.

You will work in a variety of settings (e.g. Health Centres, Childrens Centres, nurseries and patients homes)

In your role you will work with children and families demonstrating strategies and activities to support communication development, helping others understand how best to support a child's communication skills.

Main duties of the job

You role will include:

Delivering speech and language therapy to children aged 0-5 years, as advised by a speech and language therapist

Organising appointments

Supporting the speech and Language therapists by completing a variety of tasks such as making resources or scanning/photocopying documents

We firmly believe that the best services for the children we serve is achieved by providing effective training and supporting our therapy assistants. You will be supported by the following:

  • Guidance and support on how to administer speech and language therapy techniques
  • Regular supervision with your line manager
  • A thorough induction period including training and shadowing of other therapists and therapy assistants
  • A rolling programme of in-house training (including developing speech sounds, Using Picture Exchange Communication systems and Attention Autism, to name but a few.
  • Working as part of a team

You will work as a member of our Early Years Team. This is a challenging and varied role. Day to day you will be running therapy sessions (groups or individual) for a varied population of 0-5 year olds including but not limited to children with language disorders and delays, social communication disorders, speech difficulties, down syndrome, general delay.

Job responsibilities

Purpose

The post holder will implement individual and / or group SLT packages devised by a speech and language therapist and in addition will need; NVQ level/knowledge and formal training with extended experience to work with a range of clients in a range of settings, taking responsibility for dealing with clinical and non-clinical situations relating to the childs speech, language and communication needs as they occur.

The post holder will modify approaches and activities within a programme and will develop activities to meet the clients need.

The post holder will need to provide and receive routine information and handle potentially difficult or sensitive, clinical and non-clinical situations appropriately. The post holder will work independently within clearly defined activities.

S/he will manage own workload, planning timetable and prioritising time and activities to meet the actively changing needs of the total client group.

To carry out child centred therapy plans using evidence based practice to ensure that the individuals full potential is developed or maintained.

To undertake training and supervision as required.

Principal duties to include:

To provide support and advice for the childs family and parents about all aspects of their care that relate to their therapy needs, adjusting your use of language to allow for their level of comprehension to understand with remote support from the speech and language therapist.

To provide and receive complex and sensitive information with regard to a childs difficulties and expectations.

To attend meetings where requested in order to provide specialist advice about the therapy needs of the child.

To be able to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity in response to parents and children.

To work closely with parents who are themselves dealing with anger, grief and frustration as they come to terms with the impact of their childs condition.

To contribute to the assessment process and provide feedback to the therapist.

To contribute to specialist reports of therapists for use within inter-agencies, e.g. educational documentation relevant to the practice setting, standards and guidelines

To ensure that up to date written electronic records and activity are maintained in accordance with the professional and organisation standards

To contribute to the childs diagnosis by communicating assessment findings to the childs paediatrician, parents/carers and other involved professionals.

To make referrals to other professionals and agencies if required to address the childs global needs.

To provide training to parents/carers and educational staff.

To undertake presentation of paediatric therapy related talks both internally and externally.

To participate in the delivery of the therapy development plan.

To demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in internal and external development opportunities

To deputise for the Speech and Language Therapist when required.

To effectively plan the daily management of a caseload of children

To respond to urgent referrals/ requests and occasionally unpredictable work patterns.

To prioritise clinical work and balance other patient related and professional activities as the department requires.

To assess clients, carers and other professionals understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with clients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

To implement therapy plans for each child incorporating individual or group therapy sessions and programmes for use at home and/or in education settings.

To contribute to the re-evaluation and progress therapy programmes depending on the needs of each child and the outcomes expected in conjunction with the Speech and Language Therapist.

To use investigative and analytical skills, and where unsure to seek guidance from senior staff.

To implement a range of specialist child-centred individual and/or group interventions, using clinical reasoning skills.

To ensure that clinical boundaries are maintained where appropriate training has been given and competencies have been assessed.

To not attempt any procedure without appropriate training and having been deemed competent.

To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out Speech and Language Therapy duties and to adhere to departmental policies and guidelines to ensure safe use of equipment by self and others.
