Job summary

This is an important role within Health Informatics and performance management within CSH where the post holder will play a key role in designing, producing, and maintaining a high quality Data Warehouse and reporting solution. This post will play a pivotal role in developing and building an intelligence platform within the organisation to help deliver highly effective clinical and corporate services..

Main duties of the job

Work closely with HI department colleagues to further develop the warehouse and intelligence functions.

The Developer will work alongside and support information staff that will create complex and ad hoc reports based on report models deployed by the developer.

Use leading edge technologies, Microsoft BI Stack (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS), SQL Language, Microsoft Power BI to develop reports, cubes, Data Mining Models and key performance indicators for the Trust.

Support in creating reports which provide meaningful analysis to the organisation, which require little intervention and can be used by managers and clinicians on a routine basis.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Work closely with HI department colleagues to further develop the warehouse and intelligence functions.

The Developer will work alongside and support information staff that will create complex and ad hoc reports based on report models deployed by the developer.

Use leading edge technologies, Microsoft BI Stack (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS), SQL Language, Microsoft Power BI to develop reports, cubes, Data Mining Models and key performance indicators for the Trust.

Support in creating reports which provide meaningful analysis to the organisation, which require little intervention and can be used by managers and clinicians on a routine basis.

Communication skills

Lead on the warehouse and reporting solution development cycle including, Development, User Acceptance Testing and Live.

Ensure that all change requests are captured and documented.

Design and implement, in conjunction with HI colleagues, complex and sensitive models used by report builder. They will continually work with HI team members to identify routine data manipulation tasks, and where possible develop automation for these tasks.

Work closely with colleagues to ensure that construction and presentation of the data supports the business requirements and conforms to NHS data dictionary standards and data set change notices.

Suggest and recommend to the Head of HI, any new software packages or processes that are available that may improve workflow and practices.

There will be contact with 3rd party system suppliers requiring clear, knowledgeable, and forceful communication.

Presenting complex, sensitive, or contentious information to a large group of staff.

Analytical and judgemental skills

Use Kimball group methodology to develop and maintain the organisation data warehouse, including data modelling using facts and dimensions, cubes, database management, master data management, data integration, ETL, system architecture. The warehouse will need to technical troubleshooting ability built in.

Need to have at least a basic understanding of Azure and Cloud Services. They will also be expected to have ideas about data visualisation and have an understanding of Power BI as a front end platform.

Ensure that the security of the data warehouse and its requisite presentation layer is secure and that proper security is in place for internal and external to the organisation users.

Create Data Mining Models bringing together multiple data sets to discover hidden patterns in the vast amounts of data held by the organisation, including issues which will help operationally and corporately.

Participate in the periodic review of the Trusts data manipulation processes and software, assist the design and implementation of reports developed by the information team where appropriate, and ensure that code, including stored procedures, required supports the reporting and analysis needs of the HI Team is formally documented, commented and maintained.

Judgements involving complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of data and outcomes.

Planning and organisational skills

Plan and set-up meetings where needed. Preparation for all meetings, including ones not set up by the post holder, is vital and will include supporting in the preparation of performance reports and summary documents.

Liaise with the services in order to understand performance issues and see if there are any areas where business intelligence could improve processes, mainly the recording and reporting of data.

Contribute to project plans and run projects themselves from inception to completion with autonomy to minimise risks in a way that is in line with the department, service, and organisation best interests.

Planning, formulating, and organisation of a broad range of complex activities, some of which are ongoing and require the constant adjustment of plans or strategies.

Patient / client care

There will be non-clinical contact only and will not be involved in any way directly with patient care.

Policy and service development

Play a fundamental part of developing plans for the HI department. They will fully support the Head of Health Informatics and stand in for them when required.

Support in the shaping of other services improvements and developments, where HI support is required or HI will aid in the improvement of the service, such as improving data collection or data quality.

They will sit and support in service projects and lead in these from a HI service view point.

Responsible for policy implementation and for discrete policy development for the service.

Financial and physical resources

There will be no budget responsibility

Look after the equipment provided to them, which will normally be a laptop and a phone. Any other equipment which belongs to the organisation which the post holder has responsibility for, should be taken extremely good care of.

Responsible for the repair and maintenance of physical assets namely the data warehouse and corresponding environments.

Human resources

Act as an expert for the HI department in all areas and can ask the staff within the department to carry out work

When standing in for the Head of Health Informatics, they will be fully responsible for the staff and the decisions that need to be made in that role.

Act as a mentor for staff within the department and will contribute to staff training by providing specialist knowledge of the business and any issues that will affect the delivery of reporting.

Responsible for providing training in own discipline to large groups from across the organisation.

Information resources

The post holder will create reports in Power BI, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other programmes as required. They will be expected to have specialist knowledge of NHS datasets and an understanding of the systems in use within the organisation.

They will work with the clinical systems team and IT department to support in changes needed for improved reporting across the organisation. All changes will be handled appropriately by involving the correct services, IT colleagues and change management processes as necessary.

Keep up to date with new technologies and opportunities to implement new technology, including open source data sources.

Responsible for management support and development of information systems across the organisation as the major job responsibility, in order to fulfil all reporting requirements needed by the organisation and external stakeholders.

Research and development

Expected to take part in audits (internal and external) where necessary.

Regularly undertakes equipment testing, in order to ensure the smooth running of the data warehouse and all associated environments.
