Main duties of the job

As a Prison RMN, your core duties will involve conducting comprehensive mental health assessments and formulating effective, person-centred care plans. You will manage a defined caseload, providing evidence-based therapeutic interventions, from crisis de-escalation to longer-term support. A key part of your role will be to safely administer and manage medication, working closely with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure seamless care. You will also be responsible for maintaining high-standard clinical documentation and contributing to risk assessments, all within the unique and dynamic prison environment.

Job responsibilities

To provide high-quality, evidence-based mental health nursing care to patients within a prison environment. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for a defined caseload, working autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT). The role requires a resilient, non-judgmental, and proactive professional capable of delivering compassionate care in a complex and secure setting.

2. Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Practice:

  • Conduct comprehensive, person-centred mental health assessments, including risk assessments.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans in collaboration with patients and the MDT.

  • Provide a range of evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including crisis intervention, brief solution-focused therapy, and psycho-education.

  • Safely administer and manage medication, in accordance with NMC guidelines and local policies.

  • Monitor and report on patient progress, maintaining accurate and timely electronic health records.

  • Triage mental health needs and respond effectively to emergencies.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain professional registration with the NMC and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct.

  • Act as a named nurse for a defined caseload, ensuring continuity of care.

  • Participate in clinical supervision, reflective practice, and mandatory training.

  • Contribute to the MDT, sharing information and expertise to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.

  • Work collaboratively with prison staff, external healthcare providers, and other agencies.

Safety and Security:

  • Maintain a safe therapeutic environment while adhering to all prison security protocols.

  • Understand and work within the constraints of a Category A prison setting.
