Main duties of the job

As a Duty & Support Officer, you will be the frontline of our service, providing vital support to individuals accessing our drug and alcohol team. Your key responsibilities will include conducting initial assessments, managing risk, and offering immediate crisis intervention to service users. You will develop and deliver tailored psycho-social support plans, working collaboratively with each person to empower them in their recovery. A central part of your role will be working in partnership with multi-disciplinary teams, GPs, and external agencies to ensure a seamless, coordinated approach to care for every individual we support.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide high-quality, evidence-based support and interventions to service users with drug and/or alcohol problems. The post holder will act as a designated support officer, managing a caseload, conducting assessments, and delivering a range of psychosocial interventions under the supervision of senior clinical staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Practice:

  • To act as a first point of contact, receiving and screening referrals for the service.

  • To undertake comprehensive assessments of service users, including risk assessments and the development of risk management plans.

  • To manage a defined caseload, providing structured one-to-one and group-based psychosocial interventions.

  • To deliver harm reduction advice, information, and support, including on blood-borne viruses and safer injecting practices.

  • To contribute to the management of clients in crisis, providing immediate support and liaising with appropriate emergency services.

  • To support service users through their treatment journey, including medically assisted recovery.

Communication and Partnership:

  • To work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT), contributing to team meetings and care planning.

  • To liaise effectively with GPs, pharmacies, mental health services, social care, and other external agencies to ensure integrated care.

  • To maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date clinical records in line with professional and service standards.

Professional Development:

  • To participate in clinical and managerial supervision.

  • To take responsibility for own continuing professional development and to participate in training as required.

Confidentiality/Data Protection:

  • To maintain the highest standards of confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection Act and local information governance policies.

Person Specification:

Essential Criteria:

  • Professional qualification in a relevant health or social care field (e.g., OT, Social Work, Nursing, Psychology) OR significant equivalent experience in a substance misuse or mental health setting.

  • Demonstrable experience of working with individuals with drug and/or alcohol problems.

  • Knowledge of a range of psychosocial interventions and harm reduction principles.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to assess risk and formulate risk management plans.

  • Competent IT skills for record keeping and communication.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Registered with a relevant professional body (e.g., HCPC, SWE, NMC).

  • Training in motivational interviewing, CBT techniques, or dual diagnosis.
