Join our dedicated team at the Williams Day Unit, a dynamic and supportive outpatient chemotherapy department at PAHT. We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Band 5 or 6 Oncology Nurse to provide exceptional care to our haematology and oncology patients.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a specialist nurse to be at the heart of our service, delivering a wide range of systemic anti-cancer therapies and supportive treatments. You will play a pivotal role in assessing patients, managing complex treatments, and providing vital education and support to patients and their families throughout their care pathway.

The ideal candidate will be a competent and confident practitioner, essential in providing cover on specified dates. You must hold a current Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT) Passport and be proficient in delivering chemotherapy via IV, subcutaneous, and oral routes for both haematology and oncology patients. Essential skills also include competence in accessing CVADs, cannulation, and administering supportive products like IV iron, IVIG, and Zometa.

Main duties of the job

n this hands-on clinical role, you will be responsible for the direct delivery of specialist nursing care. Your core duties will include:

  • Administering a full range of treatments:Safely delivering Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT) including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, both intravenously and subcutaneously, as well as supportive products like blood transfusions, IV iron, and Zometa.

  • Advanced clinical procedures:Utilising your skills in venepuncture, cannulation, and the care and access of Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs).

  • Holistic patient assessment & care:Assessing patients' suitability for treatment at each visit, monitoring for side effects, and providing expert advice on topics such as neutropenic sepsis and symptom management.

  • Patient advocacy & education:Acting as a key source of information and support, empowering patients and their carers through education on their treatment and health promotion.

  • Maintaining rigorous standards:Ensuring all clinical observations and patient records are accurately maintained, interpreted, and acted upon to guarantee the highest standards of safety and personalised care.

They will act as a key worker for a defined patient group, providing specialist advice, education, and support.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Practice:

  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your own work.

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialist nursing care for patients undergoing a range of treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive therapies.

  • Safely and competently administer SACT via intravenous, subcutaneous, and oral routes in accordance with local and national policies, and the SACT Passport protocol.

  • Demonstrate competence in venepuncture, cannulation, and the management and access of Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs).

  • Administer a range of supportive therapies including blood products, IV immunoglobulins (IVIG), IV iron infusions, and bisphosphonates (e.g., Zometa).

  • Monitor patients for potential side effects and toxicities of treatment, taking appropriate and prompt action, including the management of anaphylaxis and neutropenic sepsis.

  • Perform and document accurate clinical observations, interpreting findings and escalating concerns appropriately.

Communication and Patient Support:

  • Provide clear, sensitive, and expert information, advice, and support to patients, families, and carers regarding their diagnosis, treatment plan, and management of side effects.

  • Educate patients and carers on key topics including health promotion, neutropenic sepsis, hair loss, and other treatment-related consequences.

  • Work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), effectively communicating patient needs and changes in condition.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain your own registration with the NMC and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct.

  • Ensure your SACT Passport and all mandatory training are current and valid.
