Job summary
Aphasia Support is
looking to recruit an experienced Speech & Language Therapist to lead on
the charitys exciting new support for people with aphasia of working age in
Leeds. Funding has been secured via a VCSE Work & Health Trailblazer grant. The charity is looking to create three new in person support groups across Leeds which are aimed at
supporting people with aphasia of working age into employment, education, training
and/or achieve improved health outcomes.
This is an exciting new
project for Aphasia Support and the post holder will be working alongside a dedicated
Community Engagement Officer for Leeds. We anticipate most support will be
provided through the three new support groups but home based or online support
will be available for those people who are unable to access the support groups.
We expect the venues for the new groups to be finalised by the end of
September. Ideally, we would want the Speech & Language Therapist to start
in October. This position is offered on a fixed term basis until 31st
March 2026.
Main duties of the job
Be the main point of
contact for NHS referral partners and other organisations into the charity's
support offering for people with aphasia of working age in Leeds.
Complete in-person assessments for all new referrals
in Leeds who meet the eligibility criteria for the project.
Oversee three brand new support groups for people with
aphasia of working age in Leeds.
Ensure outcome measures are completed for each
participant on the project and ensure all project paperwork is complete in time
for reporting requirements.
Provide support and mentoring for the Community
Engagement Officer who is new in post.
Complete other tasks which are commensurate with
the role
About us
Aphasia Support is a forward thinking charity
whose mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with aphasia and their
carers, by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long term
support. We want to create a world where every person with aphasia has access
to support.
The charity has a close knit staff team of six people which includes CEO, Fundraising & Communications Manager, 3x Community Engagement Officers and Administrator. We also have a number of speech and language therapists working for the charity on a consultancy basis and over 60 volunteers.
The charity has 5 aims:
- To reduce isolation of people with aphasia
- To improve the communication skills and wellbeing of people with aphasia
- To raise awareness and understanding of aphasia
- To improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of carers and volunteers in providing support to people with aphasia
- To supplement NHS services by providing long term support for people with aphasia

- Strong knowledge and understanding of the national stroke service model, and in particular life after stroke services
- Strong knowledge of computer therapy apps to support communication goals, including AAC for people with aphasia and apraxia of speech
- Strong knowledge and understanding of supported conversation techniques

- Strong evidence of participation in service development

- HPC Registered to practice as a SLT
