I moved from care into the nursing assistant role and love working with our students with clinical needs, its really interesting and given me a chance to learn so much.

I work both directly with the nurses or under their direction as part of a super supportive small clinical team. We work closely together upskilling our wonderful Care team through direct training, supervising and supporting them to learn new procedures. This role is varied and exciting no two days are ever the same!

Interventions our team teach and assist with can include anything from Gastrostomy care, Oxygen, Tracheostomy care, Cough Assist, Non-invasive Ventilation and Oral suction. You get full training yourself and plenty of practice to grow your skills.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have:

-A passion for providing the very best care and support to our students

-Excellent communication skills

-A minimum of 2 years experience working in a relevant care setting and hold an NVQ level 2 in Health & Social care or be willing to complete the Qualification within first year of employment. (extensive relevant experience without NVQ will be considered)

-To be excited about learning new skills and sharing your knowledge with others to help them develop.

-The ability to keep calm under pressure.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Main Duties:

  • Carry out delegated nursing interventions in line with clinical care plans, such as suction, catheter care and PEG care.
  • Undertake practice competency assessments covering a range of different clinical interventions including but not limited to Gastrostomy, Oxygen, Tracheostomy care, Cough Assist, Non-invasive Ventilation and Oral suction (full training will be given)
  • Carry out Care Staff observations in practice to ensure staff remain confident and competent when undertaking delegated nursing activities
  • Deliver theoretical clinical training to care staff 1-1 and in small groups.
  • Upskill care staff by undertaking workshops in key priority areas such as Infection prevention and control, RESTORE2 and Sepsis
  • Ensuring infection prevention control (IPC) is prioritised and policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Play a vital role in carrying out the Quality Assurance Cycle. Including carrying out Audits in key areas such as IPC and Complex Clinical care plans.
  • Support the development of action plans to help improve practice where improvements are needed.
  • Review Clinical Care Plans and associated Risk assessments under the supervision of the registered nursing team.
  • Carry out health screening such as Nutritional Screening, Skin Integrity and Clinical observations.
  • Raise and report any deterioration in health of the students to the registered nursing team or community health care teams.
  • Make referrals to external health teams to promote health and wellbeing.
  • Attend and contribute to EHCPs and health and social care reviews.
  • Support student nurses whilst they are on placement at Henshaws.
  • Support with new student assessments.
  • Assist in the identification of care needs and the implementation of appropriate care plans and risk assessments.
  • Identify and report Clinical accidents and incidents under the supervision of the registered nursing team.
  • Ensure that staff are supported to utilise the correct PPE in line with government guidance. This a includes Fit Testing staff for appropriate FFP3 masks for Aerosol Generating Procedures, as well as teaching appropriate donning and doffing techniques of required PPE.
  • Ensure that Henshaws safeguarding policies and procedures are adhered to at all times.
  • Ensure that an appropriate handover is given each day between staff on differing shift patterns to ensure continuity of care
  • Manage and administrate students medication in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • Liaise with the Registered Nursing team and Care Leads to ensure that all complex care needs are met effectively.
  • To work alongside and support a team of care support workers to ensure that the care and support delivered is of the highest quality.
  • To facilitate safe Moving and Handling of students with complex health needs.
  • Accurately and appropriately record and report students needs and progress including keeping rigorous Medication Administration Records and food and fluid intake charts.
  • Keep up to date and remain fully aware of the students difficulties and disabilities and any care and medication requirements of those students.
  • Help with training to ensure that appropriate care equipment is used correctly and safely.
  • Report any concerns to the Clinical Lead or any other manager which may affect student/staff welfare or safety.
  • Assist all students in any way which promotes and enables their development and independence.

  • Work in a person-centred way when delivering care as part of the college day.
