Job summary
Brighton & Hove Federation is seeking motivated and compassionate Stop Smoking Advisors to deliver evidence-based smoking cessation support to patients registered with GP practices across Brighton & Hove.
This flexible casual/bank role supports the delivery of a Public Health commissioned service aimed at increasing the number of smokers making quit attempts and achieving successful quits.
Advisors will provide structured behavioural support and guidance on stop smoking aids, supporting patients through their quit journey using evidence-based treatment programmes.
The service aims to increase the number of smokers setting a quit date and achieving CO-verified four-week quits, while improving access to stop smoking support across the city.
Main duties of the job
Deliver evidence-based stop smoking interventions to patients registered with Brighton & Hove GP practices
Provide behavioural support in line with the Standard Treatment Programme (STP)
Support patients to set quit dates and maintain motivation during their quit attempt
Deliver structured consultations including pre-quit preparation and follow-up support
Measure and record carbon monoxide (CO) levels to verify quit outcomes where appropriate
Provide advice and support on stop smoking aids, including nicotine replacement therapy and other cessation options
Maintain accurate patient records using appropriate digital systems
Support achievement of service KPIs including quit attempts, four-week quits and CO verification rates
Engage priority groups and support equitable access to stop smoking services
Work collaboratively with GP practices, local public health teams and other stop smoking services

The service is designed to increase the number of smokers making quit attempts and achieving successful quits through a combination of behavioural support and stop smoking aids.
Key responsibilities include:
Delivering structured stop smoking consultations following the Standard Treatment Programme, including pre-quit preparation and weekly follow-up support
Supporting patients through a programme consisting of multiple contacts during the first four weeks after a quit date,
Providing behavioural counselling to help patients manage cravings, triggers and relapse risk
Supporting patients to access appropriate stop smoking aids for a minimum of 12 weeks, based on nicotine dependence and individual needs
Conducting carbon monoxide monitoring to validate quit outcomes
Recording patient outcomes including quit attempts, quit dates and four-week quit status
Contributing to service monitoring and quality improvement activities
Working collaboratively with Brighton & Hove City Council Smokefree Team, GP practices and pharmacies to ensure patients can access appropriate support pathways
Support may be delivered through face-to-face, telephone or virtual consultations depending on patient needs.
