We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic Medicines Manager to join our team at Millom. This is a part-time position offering 30 hours per week, ideal for someone who is passionate about making a difference in patient care and medicines management.

The successful candidate will support the safe and efficient use of medicines, overseeing key processes, ensuring policy compliance, and working closely with both clinical and administrative teams to promote best practice.

Main duties of the job

As a Medicines Manager you will be expected to:

Be the main provision of an efficient, patient-friendly repeat prescribing, audits, stocktake and ordering of vaccines and medical consumables.

You will contribute to the efficiency and quality improvement of the service to both patients and clinicians by putting into place processes that minimize the chance of error, reduce medicine wastage, and improve the quality and accuracy of the practice repeat prescriptions

Job description

Job responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities, which follows, represents the broad range of tasks which may be required to be undertaken either routinely or periodically. This list is not exhaustive and the role may include additional duties which are not listed here:-

  • Collect Monthly data to monitor improvements in line with core medicine management objectives
  • Attend and disseminate within the practice learning and actions from the monthly medicine meetings, relevant courses and training events
  • Weekly co-ordinate a cohort of patients who need their medication ordering in a structured manner to ensure safer compliance and to restrict them over ordering their medications. Keep all clinicians up to date with any changes in the cohorts medication and any anomalies
  • Co-ordinate and keep up to date the High-Risk Drug Monitoring register monthly recalling all patients for their regular bloods to ensure safe management of care and maximum recovery of payment for the service provided.
  • Generate the prescriptions for all DDS packs for the local pharmacies.
  • Supporting quality improvement measures and contributing to the Quality and Outcomes Framework and Local Enhanced Services
  • Managing medication optimisation, working closing with the clinical lead, practice pharmacists and all prescribers, to be defaulting to cost-effective alternatives to save the NHS money
  • Working closely with the other Cumbria Health practices Medicines Management Teams
  • Assist the MOP to manage the safety alerts into the practice, maintain an electronic version and ensuring that these are actioned with GPs for the safety of patients.
  • Build expertise to be able to optimise the benefits from supporting digital systems, eg Eclipse
  • Promote better use of medicines by developing and improving patient information
  • Work alongside the prescription clerk to address patient concerns and queries and provide medicine management advice
  • Apply judgement in assessing medicine management problems and queries to determine the best course of action
  • Monitoring usage of certain prescriptions and working with clinicians to improve efficacy and safety (e.g. opiate prescribing)
  • Facilitate Medicine Management team meetings within the practice ensuring all delegates attend
  • Organise and submit monthly the prescription claim forms that are sent to NHSBSA (formerly Prescription Pricing Authority) for remuneration
  • Assist the MOP with the collation and interpretation of results from the PMM scheme and assist in the preparation of reports on the progress to the practice
  • Help the practice in the implementation of any drug formularies and treatment guidelines
  • Working with the clinical team to maintain a record of all drugs stored within the practice and ensure only drugs within Cumbria Healths agreed rationale are ordered and stocked
  • Line Management of the practices Prescription Clerk
  • Other reasonable administration and medicines management tasks not covered above
