Job summary
Melrose medical centre is requiring a receptionist to work in a small but busy GP practice. This role is for a part time member of staff, working up to 16 hours a week.
They will be responsible for all aspects of receptionist duties including answering the telephone, booking appointments for the clinicians and dealing with patients queries.
The successful candidate will be trained to deal with various reception roles including prescription requests, printing blood forms and booking appointments and organising various QOF clinics.
The candidate will be enthusiastic, able to work as a team but also able to work alone and use their own initiative, they must be flexible with regards to working hours to cover staff holidays and sickness and to open early and close late.
System one experience is preferable but not essential.

Main duties of the job
- The smooth and efficient running of the Practice reception, thereby assisting the Doctors in providing a high standard of service to patients in a caring environment
- Accurate storage and production of information, computer or paper based
- To be polite and courteous at all times and be of smart appearance
- Act as liaison between Doctor and patient
- Adhere to all protocols and guidelines set by the practice

- Answer the telephone and pass messages to other colleagues
- Deal with patient queries, liaising with other disciplinaries
- Contact patients and outside agencies, hospitals, and social services
- Scan and index all correspondence into patients' electronic records
- Read code all relevant diagnosis and information into patients' electronic records
- Attend relevant training, e.g. BLS, and staff meetings
- Produce letters for referrals and other correspondence on behalf of Doctors and other members of staff
- Help and support Doctors to complete medical reports
- Provide administrative support for cervical screening and childhood immunisation programmes
- Organise EDI links and patient notes for those joining and leaving the practice
- Organise clinics
- Deal with specimens
- File correspondence
- Update, repair, and summarise medical records
- Assist Doctors during the examination of patients, by acting as a chaperone
- Print prescriptions for Doctors' signatures, in accordance with protocols
- Contact patients regarding results and complete blood forms, where appropriate
- Maintain a tidy working environment and a welcoming reception area
- Seek advice from the Practice Manager or Doctor if you are unsure of a task
- Assist with various tasks carried out by other members of the team
- Use computers and software appropriate for tasks, log any system errors, and contact the software provider where necessary.
