Job summary

Our Marie Curie Hospice, Cardiff and the Vale are expanding our service to support more people at end of life than ever before. In light of this we are looking for a Deputy Ward Manager to join our well established, multi-disciplinary team to allow us to care for more patients in our IPU. Main duties of the job

Deputy Ward Managers provide specialist inpatient care to support our patients, medical, social, spiritual and emotional needs. Marie Curie provides the best possible quality of life while ensuring that the highest professional standards and dignity are reflected in our daily practice.

You will support the Ward Manager by providing strong clinical and professional leadership and inspire our dedicated team of nurses and HCAs to deliver patient-centred care to the highest standards. Recent experience in palliative care would be an advantage but the ability to work in a rapidly changing environment is essential.

Job responsibilities

Due to increased demand for our services, the Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth is opening a second ward. To meet capacity, we are now looking for a Band 6 Deputy Ward Manager to manage and supervise our team of nurses and Healthcare Assistants within our Inpatient Unit based at our fantastic facility, overlooking the sea. This is an exciting time for the hospice as we look to further develop our services and support our patients and their loved ones when they need us most.

  • Title: Deputy Ward Manager
  • Salary:£39,027 £35,392 - £42,618 per annum (Marie Curie Clinical Pay Scale, aligned with AFC Band 6)
  • Hours: Full time 37.5 hours (Nights / Day shift) but part time may be considered
  • Contract: Permanent (Rotational on to days, nights and weekends)
  • Location: Marie Curie Hospice, Bridgeman Rd, Penarth CF64 3YR

Palliative care is becoming more complex and our stakeholders expectations of service delivery are changing. The Penarth Hospice is adapting and evolving to be able to respond to these altering requirements.

Ideally, we are looking for an existing Band 6 with managerial experience looking to progress into a deputy position. However, we will consider applications from experienced Band 5 RNs.

We encourage candidates to arrange an informal visit to the hospice to come and experience the welcoming atmosphere, high standards of care and compassionate, yet positive environment Marie Curie hospices promote.

What we are looking for:

  • RGN Registration Level 1
  • Proven supervisory and managerial experience at Band 5 and above
  • Ideally, experience of caring for patients with specialist palliative care needs (hospice / hospital / community)
  • Ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders (internal and external)
  • Ability to demonstrate good people management and leadership skills
  • Ability to manage time, self and own workload and prioritise effectively
  • Welsh speaking is desirable but not essential
