Main duties of the job

The post-holder will play an important medical role managing patients with complex palliative care needs and sharing clinical responsibility for patients with both malignant and non-malignant conditions. The post-holder will provide advice and support to relevant specialists including hospital specialist palliative care teams, oncology services and those caring for patients with long term conditions. This role requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills and involves liaison with specialists across the region to ensure the highest standards of care for patients.

The post holder will participate in teaching within the hospice for junior doctors, registrars and medical students and have previous experience of participating in audit programmes. There is a commitment to evidence-based medical practice supported by a regular journal club, teaching sessions, an audit group and an active research programme. We encourage personal and professional development as part of this role.

In addition to clinical and educational roles, the post holder will be involved in the planning and the delivery of services provided by the Newcastle Hospice, and activities relating to maintaining clinical excellence within the service.

Marie Curie Hospice, Newcastle is an 18 Bed Hospice for symptom control, rehabilitation, respite and end of life care. A day therapy unit and out-patient facilities are available.

This is a well-established and effective team providing specialist palliative care to the residents of North East England.

The successful applicant will have demonstrable leadership skills and experience of palliative care in a wide range of settings. In addition, this role demands a commitment to providing patient focused care, with the desire to develop services for patients and their families.

Applicants must have full GMC registration and be on or eligible within 6 months from date of interview for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine (via CCT, CESR or EC rights) or have extensive experience at associate specialist level.

Arrangements will be made for mentorship for newly appointed consultants.
