Job summary

The successful candidate will work within a service offering support and care to individuals living with a palliative condition and bereaved families within the framework of the Psychology and Bereavement Service.

They will function as a member of the team alongside associated professionals such as counsellors, creative therapists, administrative staff and a volunteer bereavement support team.

The postholder will work across the lifespan and offer psychological support to bereaved children, patients and families, acting as a specialist resource and working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team.

*30 hours per week to be worked in accordance with the needs of the service*

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist advice, consultancy and training to other professions (non-psychologist colleagues within and outside the team), on the psychological assessments, formulation and treatment, and management of the full range of psychological problems which may be experienced by the patient group.
  • To maintain own caseload of those patients and families with complex needs.
  • To ensure the provision education and provide regular updates for the team. You will be required to attend professional meetings and reviews as relevant and cascade this accordingly.
  • To provide continuing clinical supervision and support for the counselling team.

To implement policies and propose changes to policy, practice, and service development, addressing areas of need respectively by proposing and implementing policy changes that may impact both within and beyond the area served by the team/service.

To lead, facilitate and participate in discussion on bereavement and psychological aspects of palliative care across the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).

To provide support for colleagues within the MDT, participating in clinical supervision and reflective practice.

To provide highly specialised psychological assessments based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of highly complex psychological data from a variety of sources including psychological (and neuropsychological tests where appropriate), self report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members and others involved in the patients care.

To develop psychological formulations of presenting problems or situations that integrate information from assessments within a coherent framework that draws upon psychological theory and evidence, which incorporates interpersonal, societal, cultural and biological factors.

To provide clinical placements for Trainee Clinical Psychologists, ensuring that trainees acquire the necessary skills, competencies, and experience to contribute effectively to good mental health care and to contribute to the assessment and evaluation of such competencies. To act as placement supervisor for Doctoral Clinical Psychology Trainees, taking clinical responsibility for the supervisees work.
