Job summary

An exciting opportunity has become available to join the National Childrens Air Ambulance (NCAA), could you be our new Operations Team Leader?

The Operations Team Leader (NCAA) will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the NCAA Crew Members to ensure effective tasking and compliance of The Childrens Air Ambulance. Supporting and supervising the team of Crew Members across both our Air Bases (London Oxford Airport and Retford Gamston Airport) to ensure we provide an outstanding service to our patients and NHS Clinical Partner Teams (CPTs).

Main duties of the job

The Operations Team Leader will provide positive leadership whilst having a thorough insight into the activity across our Air Bases. Working closely with the Operations Manager, the Operations Team Leader will be involved in changes and improvements across the service to benefit patients, clinicians and the NCAA team.

The Operations Team Leader will also cover Crew Member shifts, providing resilience for Annual Leave, etc. It is estimated that 40% of the role will be covering Crew Member shifts.

Working in partnership with our Clinical Partner Teams, we fly critically ill babies and children between hospitals across the UK. With specialist clinical teams on board, we ensure young patients receive the expert care they need, fast, when every second counts.

Relationships - Internal

The Operations Team Leader (NCAA) will work closely with the Head of Operations, Operations Manager, Education & Development Lead, Airdesk Team Leader, Crew Members, Pilots, Airdesk Staff and will also support interdepartmental relationships with the wider charity functions. The Operations Team Leader will act as a key liaison between operation staff and NCAA senior leadership, promoting clear communication,collaboration and culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement across the organisation.

External

The Operations Team Leader (NCAA) will work closely with Clinical Partner Teams (CPTs -NHS specialist transport teams), Patients / Relatives, Hospital Staff, Ambulance Crews, Helipad Staff, Airport Staff, and visitors to NCAA bases. The Operational Team Leader will represent the charity in a professional and credible manner, promoting strong partnership working, safeguarding the organisations reputation, and ensuring operational excellence across all external interactions.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Oversee the day-to-day operational activities of the NCAA Air Bases, to support responsive mobilisation of NCAA aircrafts and crew, whilst promoting continuous improvement
  • Provide effective, positive leadership and support to the NCAA Crew Members
  • Facilitate regular team meetings, scenario training and embedding a culture of continual improvement

Compliance

  • Carry out regular audits of air bases and aircraft (IPC, Health & Safety, etc)
  • Embed standardisation across the team and air bases, whilst supporting staff with any new procedures and changes
  • Review incident reports relating to NCAA tasks or Crew Members, carry out reviews, feedback and learning
  • Monitor and report on Key Performance Indicators within the service to ensure they are met, whilst providing feedback on breaches

Crew Member

  • Provide operational cover for NCAA Crew Member shifts when required at NCAA Bases

General

  • Arrange servicing for medical and non-medical devices, in addition to any unscheduled maintenance to ensure equipment is readily available
  • Work closely with the Facilities Team to ensure the air bases are maintained to a high standard, scheduling any maintenance as required

  • Engage and work cohesively with NCAA Pilots to enhance service delivery

PR/Media & Fundraising

  • Education to GCSE level or equivalent in Maths and English, Grace C or above
  • Qualified as Emergency Ambulance Crew, Emergency Care Assistant, equivalent or higher
  • Leadership / Management qualification (or working towards)
  • Full UK manual driving licence
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working within healthcare (5+ years)
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of managing a team of 5+ staff
  • Experience of working within emergency care, retrieval services or intensive / critical care transfers

Desirable

  • Experience of supporting or being involved in aeromedical retrievals / transfers
