Job summary

Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Mental Health and Money Advice Advisor to support people with mental illness and their carers, partner agencies with money matters. Supporting clients via our telephone service with both poor mental health and financial difficulties. You will use existing knowledge and expertise to identify and address a range of issues, provide debt, benefit, and welfare advice.

The Mental Health and Money Advice Service is the first UK-wide service to address mental and financial health together. We aim to stop the spiral of debt and mental health issues by providing online information and advice and casework provided by telephone. The service launched in November 2017, commissioned by Mental Health UK, delivered by Adferiad in Wales, Rethink in England, Support in Mind in Scotland, and Mindwise in Northern Ireland.

Main duties of the job

I provide both advice and casework to clients by telephone who are experiencing mental health and money problems.

I complete the debt advice process with clients by providing advice and casework on a range of debt solutions and strategies.

I provide advice and casework on welfare benefits.

I provide advice and casework in relation to mental health issues such as accessing treatment and care.

I can demonstrate a commitment to delivering a service that meets the quality requirements of our funders.

I can work as part of a team to ensure smooth delivery of the service and excellent client care.

I can work flexibly with an understanding that this is a new and developing service, willing to adapt to new processes as required.

I ensure systems are used in a way that enables the management and on-going monitoring and evaluation of the project.

I continue to develop my knowledge of mental health, welfare benefits, debts, and money advice to meet the needs of the service.

I take on feedback from a variety of stakeholders and contribute to innovative changes and adaptations to service delivery.

I ensure records are kept up to date and accessible to other staff and that my casework is maintained effectively.

Knowledge

Desirable

  • Familiar with relevant legislation, regulation, guidance, codes of practice and industry standards.
  • Understanding of the social care needs of people with serious mental illness.
  • An understanding and knowledge of the barriers faced by people with complex and multiple needs as well as relevant specialist support services.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE or O Level standard education.

Desirable

  • Training (caseworker and/or specialist levels) in money advice from an accredited training providers e.g. IMA, Wiser adviser, Citizens Advice pathways, CPAG.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working in money and/or welfare benefits support or experience working in a similar environment.
  • Experience of working with vulnerable clients, particularly people affected by mental illness.
  • Experience of helping clients with budgeting. Supporting with benefit applications.
  • Experience of working with electronic case recording systems.
  • Experience in remote advice delivery e.g. telephone, email, virtual chat etc.
  • Well-developed IT skills- comfortable using Microsoft Office packages and bespoke databases.

Desirable

  • Experience providing money advice (including debt and financial capability, welfare benefits/income max) either face to face or via telephone.
  • Experienced at providing casework covering debt, welfare benefits or mental health.
  • Hold a wide range of money advice knowledge; budgeting, dealing with priority and non-priority debts, County Court / High Court options, insolvency options and a wide range of welfare benefits.
  • Experience in providing casework covering debt, welfare benefits or mental health, this can include budgeting and helping with money matters, benefits claims.
