Job summary

Thorpe Hall Hospice is the only specialist palliative care inpatient unit in Peterborough for over 18-year-olds. We provide care and support for people who are living with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families and loved ones.

We have medically light beds for patients who may chose us as their Preferred Place of Death (PPOD) and see patients who require a short stay admission for complex symptom management before returning to their Preferred Place of Care (PPOC).

We have full and part time roles available to cover rotational shifts. This includes earlies, lates, 12-hour day shifts, nights & weekends, long and short shifts to create a great work life balance.

As this role is to cover a 24/7 service, we are looking for candidates who can offer some flexibility to cover working nights and weekend shifts.

The successful applicants will play an active role within our multidisciplinary team. It's all about giving our patients the best possible quality of life.

The support we offer is tailored to meet individuals' medical, social, spiritual, and emotional needs.

You will work alongside Specialty Doctors, therapy staff, volunteers and other vital members of the MDT taking a holistic approach in providing the best possible outcomes for each patient.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be an NMC registered nurse, with post-registration experience from an acute medical care setting or community, hospice setting.
  • While palliative care experience is desirable, we will accept applications from nurses of varying backgrounds with a desire and willingness to learn and develop within the speciality of palliative care.
  • You will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to work well within a team, use initiative and have excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care using evidence-based guidelines.
  • Provide medicines management, including administering regular medications and set up syringe drivers and IV medication.
  • Maintain high standards of care delivery by working collaboratively within regulatory body standards and the Sue Ryder Quality Governance Policy.
  • Act as an ambassador of Sue Ryder to service users and their relatives, colleagues, and members of the public.
  • Have a good general knowledge of computer-based systems including SystmOne.
  • We will provide a thorough induction with supernumerary time to settle into the role and full training/competency assessment will be provided.
  • Maintain all records in line with policies and procedures.
  • Support students on placement at the hospice.

There is plenty of scope to further develop your own skills in specialist palliative care, and planned career progression through our education programme and development framework is encouraged

About us

At Sue Ryder, we cant make lifes most difficult moments easy, but we can carry some of the load. For more than 70 years, we have been a source of strength and support for anyone living with a life-limiting illness or grief.

Dying and grief are universal experiences, but too many people face them alone. We are a safe and reassuring hand you can reach for. From providing care and support for someone at the end of their life to helping someone manage their grief, we know there is no one size fits all when it comes to how we cope and the help we need. We campaign for everyone who is approaching the end of their life or grieving to have access to the right support, at the right time. And we seek to break down the barriers to talking about dying and grief - so we can all be better prepared and better equipped to be there for each other.

We can make a positive difference during even the darkest of times. Whether in the last months, weeks, or days of life, or living with grief, we help people live the best life they possibly can. We are there when it matters.
