Main duties of the job

MAIN PURPOSE:

To lead and develop specialist psychiatry provision within Brainkinds Hospitals. To operate within a recovery model where people learn new strategies and coping mechanisms with the lifelong effects of acquired brain injury and other associated conditions. The service, like other BIRT (Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust) services, operates holistically as opposed to a purely medical /clinical model. This medical post sits within a community rehabilitation model using a bio-psycho-social approach.

The Consultant doctor in psychiatry will take the lead role during the stage of stabilisation where poly medications, unstable presentations, fragmented social networks of support need to be, rationalised to be more manageable and helpful for the person. They will take the lead/strategic role within the multi/interdisciplinary team providing psychiatry input within the Brainkind neurobehavioral model to people with acquired brain injury.

To act as a positive professional role model, and to pro-actively support the clinical leadership team to achieve Brainkind Objectives.

Job responsibilities

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (But not limited to)

  • To be the lead consultant for neuropsychiatry of brain injury at Brainkind hospitals and to be the Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act. To hold clinical responsibility for patients admitted to Brainkinds hospital facility within the *[York area] [Glasgow area] *delete as applicable
  • To be the lead consultant and undertake regular psychiatric reviews of patients in the service and work with other disciplines to provide a well-balanced model of acquired brain injury, rehabilitation and care.
  • To take the lead in specialist consultant psychiatric advice regarding service provision and delivery to the speciality psychiatry doctor and colleagues within Brainkind hospitals.
  • To take a leadership role in the clinical team. To address performance issues within the team and to liaise with the manager to resolve these where they do not meet national standards or expectations.
  • To ensure positive effective working relationships with key individuals, and to develop business relationships with clinical colleagues both within and outside out hospitals.
  • To be aware of equality and diversity characteristic of People We Support, families, stakeholders and staff, and adapt to meeting individual circumstances.
  • To provide a high quality, evidence-based interventions as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to provide safe, effective and professional psychiatric treatment within a model of highly integrated and well represented, neurobehavioral multi-disciplinary care.
  • Take clinical leadership and oversight of all weekly clinical team meetings.
  • To take clinical leadership for cases and have a case load where the postholder oversees the staff grade doctors assessments, oversees delivery of multi/interdisciplinary inputs, and ensures goal attainment and review meetings are held appropriately.
  • To liaise with internal and external professionals, relevant organisations, family members and People We Support.
  • Take the lead in liaising with other clinical teams within and outside Brainkind as required, general practitioners and medical specialists with regards the physical health of the patients.
  • Overseeing pre-admission assessment of patients out of area for their suitability of the service when required.
  • To participate in a non-residential on call rota which is in a defined geographical area based on partner agency on call arrangements (which may be subject to change) including York Hospital.
  • To provide clinical consultancy, personal support and practice guidance to the specialist Doctor Psychiatrist working in Our Hospital.
  • There is requirement to have Section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007) Approval
