Job summary

St Leonard's Hospice are recruiting a skilled and motivated person to join the Hospice's Team as a Facilities Assistant.

The Facilities Team performs a crucial function in ensuring the Hospice estate, including Retail, are kept safe with servicing, maintenance and repairs completed in a timely manner and to a high standard.

Main duties of the job

The role incorporates a variety of tasks including:

  • performing basic maintenance/ DIY/ painting tasks
  • undertaking Pre Planned Maintenance
  • portering duties including some manual handling
  • transporting patients and staff to appointments

This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week between 8am - 4pm, Monday to Friday and there will be a requirement to be a part of the facilities on-call rota.

Job description

Job responsibilities

As part of the Facilities team, the Facilities Assistant will help to maintain the estate including basic repairs and handyperson duties, gardening, portering, cleaning, setting up meeting rooms, security duties and some patient transport/driving. This includes not only the Main Hospice site, but also covers the Retail operation with shops located in central York City as well as Easingwold, Malton, Pocklington and Selby.

To be a member of the Facilities On-Call team, performing basic maintenance repairs and security preventative actions, as required out of hours including evenings, weekends and public holidays when competent and trained to do so. This is renumerated in line with equivalent NHS roles.

Main duties and responsibilities

Handyperson / Gardening / Caretaking Duties

1. Perform basic maintenance/DIY/painting tasks. Undertake minor works and report all defects.

2. Assist with gardening / groundwork and external duties including seasonal gardening duties, working with volunteer gardeners, as well as keeping the pathways and car parks clean, clear and safe, in particular during adverse weather conditions when gritting and / or snow clearing will be required.

3. Undertake Pre Planned Maintenance such as PAT testing, fire alarm/equipment testing and equipment maintenance etc.

4. Have an awareness of laws and policies relating to H&S, COSHH and Infection Control.

5. Perform locking up duties, according to Hospice procedure, to ensure the safety of staff and patients and that buildings are secure.

6. Prepare recycling / clinical waste / laundry for collection.

7. Undertake portering duties, including manual handling (moving and lifting) and ad hoc requests.

8. Contact Funeral Directors and assist with Mortuary requirements.

9. Supply light bulbs, batteries etc to staff as needed.

10. Ensure all areas are maintained in a good order of cleanliness including boiler/plant rooms, electrical distribution areas, storerooms and service areas, certain clinical areas, offices and meeting rooms.

11. Cleaning duties including regular scheduled high-level cleaning (training to be provided), plus carpet and window cleaning.

12. Ensure the usage of all cleaning equipment and materials is in accordance with Manufacturers recommendations and Hospice policy.

13. Liaise with external contractors to enable them to undertake work required on the Hospice or any of the retail premises/ wider estate.

Transport & Driving

1. Transport patients and staff in a professional, safe, secure and effective way. Assist patients and staff to board the vehicle, be secured and leave the vehicle safely. Ensure wheelchair patients are secured according to policy.

2. Ensure the vehicle is clean and tidy and carries correct the stock for each journey and has sufficient fuel.

3. Record any defects and record all mileage according to policy.

4. Ensure patients property is returned to them at the end of each journey.

5. If required, ensure oxygen is carried correctly according to policy.

6. Transport records, notes, samples and equipment to and from the hospital as required.

7. Report any concerns or queries regarding the patients to the relevant staff.

8. In the event of an emergency, breakdown or incident be aware of the procedures to follow.
