Job summary

Here at St Leonard's Hospice, we want everyone with a life-limiting illness to be able to get the best possible care and be supported to die well.

We also want as many people as possible to understand the difference the Hospices work makes for our patients, as well as for their families and carers. We want to give our supporters a choice of inspiring ways they can help make that difference, and to feel good for doing so.

That's why were recruiting for a Head of Fundraising to keep our wonderful community at the heart of our fundraising and create brilliant events and campaigns to engage and inspire new and existing supporters.

This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week between normal office hours, Monday to Friday however there will be a requirement to work occasional weekends and evenings with advance notice to support events.

Main duties of the job

Reporting into the Director of Income Generation, your main priorities as Head of Fundraising will be to:

  • Increase the value and sustainability of the Hospices fundraising income including vital sources such as legacy income
  • Ensure the Hospice has in place operational plans based on clear need, proven concepts, fully costed budgets and demonstrable impact
  • Take a lead in replacing our current fundraising CRM
  • Lead a team of paid and voluntary fundraisers who provide excellent supporter care
  • Work collaboratively with other key internal stakeholders to maximise income

In order to succeed in this role, you will need to have:

  • A record of success in multiple aspects of fundraising
  • A supporter first approach
  • Business planning and budget management experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including building strong relationships and business links
  • Effective leadership skills with a track record of challenging, leading and developing a diverse fundraising team

With guidance from the Director of Income Generation, this role focuses on increasing the value and sustainability of the Hospices fundraising income. We want to preserve vital sources such as legacy income and increase other sources to the same level to avoid becoming over-reliant on one income stream.

Our fundraising approach is based on five key beliefs, tightly aligned with our organisational CARES values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, Synergy):

1. We show people the power of their support by sensitively sharing the lived experiences of the Hospices beneficiaries.

2. We are open and honest with our supporters and let them know how their money is spent and what difference they make.

5. Every relationship should reward the supporter and enable the Hospice to care for more people.

As the senior management lead for fundraising, you will continuously improve the Hospices fundraising activity in this ethos, as well as managing business planning, budgeting, performance management and compliance cycles.

In the short-term, you will also be responsible for continuing key fundraising developments already underway at the Hospice:

Within existing workforce and capacity, create a new team of fundraisers focused on providing excellent supporter care for those donating their own money in support of our cause.

Alongside similar improvements in our Retail and Finance departments, and as part of the Hospice-wide Digital Transformation agenda, take a lead in replacing our current fundraising CRM (Donorflex).

Review the Hospices readiness for, and approach to, fundraising through high value gifts and charitable grants.

Main duties and responsibilities

Professional

  • Setting out annual and long-term business plans/budgets for the Fundraising department, working with the Director of Income Generation to set and monitor objectives at individual, team and department level.
  • Supporting the Executive Team to ensure the Hospice has in place operational plans based on clear need, proven concepts, fully-costed budgets and demonstrable impact.
  • Taking an active role in the Hospices Senior Leadership Team, working collaboratively with Heads of Department to maximise income.
  • Building productive relationships across the hospice to ensure that the Fundraising team are part of the wider hospice team and are able to advocate for the charity with donors and other supporters.
  • Ensuring that timely and appropriate communication and feedback mechanisms are in place for fundraising staff, volunteers and colleagues.
  • Ensuring that Fundraising team members are developed, trained and kept up to date with changes in legislation, regulation and good practice.
  • Developing and updating guidelines, protocols, policies and procedures in relation to your operational areas.
  • Carrying out investigations into any reported accidents, incidents, near-misses, complaints and expressions of dissatisfaction relating to the Hospices fundraising.

Managerial

  • Lead, manage and inspire the Fundraising Team, which consists of staff and volunteers, fostering collaboration and professional growth. Carry out regular 1:1s and annual performance reviews with direct reports.
  • Support the Community & Events Manager to reach, engage and retain supporters raising funds on behalf of the Hospice, either through their own events or by taking part in events organised by the Hospice or aligned third parties.
  • Support the Supporter Care Manager to lead a team covering In-memory Fundraising, Individual Giving, Weekly Lottery, Gifts in Wills and making it as easy as possible to donate in support of the Hospices work and to provide excellent supporter care to individual donors.
  • Line-manage the Income Generation Data Insight Lead and the Donor Data Lead, supporting them to:

- Accurately capture and record donor/donation data, ensuring it is processed, in accordance with relevant legislation and guidance.

- Automate workflows and integrate data to improve the speed, efficiency and personalisation of donor communications.

- Ensure the fundraising database is used effectively to capture and utilise donor data in the planning, delivery and review of fundraising activity.

- Maximise additional income from Gift Aid, working with colleagues in the Finance and Retail teams to streamline processes and ensure this scheme is accessible to as many supporters as possible.

-Gain and apply deep insight into the performance and efficacy of fundraising activity, at individual, team and department level, providing management information for the monitoring of overall fundraising performance.
