Job summary
To deliver a range of patient care duties under the supervision of registered nurses providing basic patient care and providing physical, psychological and spiritual needs to people with life limiting illnesses.
Main duties of the job
Maintain a high standard of patient care ensuring policies and procedures are adhered to;
Give individualised patient care under the direction and supervision of the registered nursing staff;
Assist in admitting patients to the ward, completing demographic details and recording base-line observations;
Develop skills in caring for terminally ill patients and their families;
Support registered nurses in their role and work as a member of the nursing team;
Cover a 24 hour nursing rota;
Participate in implementing care delegated by registered staff for which training has been given and competence achieved;
Recognise abnormal recordings or signs of change in a patient’s condition and report changes to a registered nurse;
Assess patients’ level of dependence in meeting personal care needs and give appropriate assistance (includes hygiene, mobility, nutrition, elimination and comfort);
Assist patients to eat and drink in a sensitive and supportive manner;
Ensure accurate and timely records of care (electronic and paper) are maintained, upholding information governance;
Be involved in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care together with other professionals;
Work as a member of the nursing team under the supervision of registered staff reporting changes in patients conditions and needs as they occur;
Participate in meetings related to families and staff where required;
Maintain a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, their families, visitors and staff. Reporting incidents to the nurse in charge;
Be fully aware and comply with all The Prince of Wales Hospice policies and procedures;
Communicate information on patient care and related matters to the nurse in charge;
Ensure correct use and due economy is made of equipment and resources; and
Participate in the induction of new staff and students.
To undertake all mandatory training as required by The Prince of Wales Hospice and participate in appropriate in-service training as and when required;
To be a co-operative and supportive member of Hospice staff, ensuring that all members are aware of any issues in the post holder’s workload, which may affect other members of the team;
To support all volunteers utilised in your area and to develop effective working relationship;
Cooperating fully in the introduction of any new technology and new methods as appropriate;
To promote at all times the Hospice philosophy and uphold its core values; and
Develop and extend knowledge of specialist palliative care through accessing available training.

Your Role

- Work under the supervision of Registered Nurses
- Assist with clinical tasks appropriate to your level of training
- Support to patients, their families and your collegues within the clinical environment

We’re seeking someone who is:

- NVQ Level 2 in a care related subject (or equivalent such as the Care Certificate and experience in end-of-life care) qualified
- NVQ Level 3 in a care related subject qualified (desirable)
