An exciting opportunity has arisen within NHS Sunderland Talking Therapies (STT), to appoint a cohort of Trainee High Intensity CBT Therapists to join our expanding team. This is a training role combining clinical practice across Sunderland with academic study at Teesside University, equipping you to deliver high-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for individuals experiencing anxiety and depression. The course starts on 12th January 2026.

About You

Do you have a registered qualification in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, counselling, or similar OR are you eligible via the BABCP Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes (KSA) route?

Do you have experience working in mental health services?

Do you have an understanding of CBT principles and NICE guidance for anxiety and depression?

Do you have a strong communication and interpersonal skills?

Main duties of the job

Deliver CBT interventions to clients with complex mental health needs.

Attend university training (approx. 2 days/week) and apply skills in clinical practice (approx. 3 days/week).

Conduct assessments, formulate treatment plans, and manage risk and safeguarding concerns.

Maintain accurate clinical records and contribute to service audits and evaluations.

Work collaboratively with GPs, voluntary agencies, and other professionals.

Participate in clinical supervision and line management.

About us

NHS Sunderland Talking Therapies Service for anxiety and depression (STT), is provided in partnership between Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW) and Sunderland Counselling Service (SCS) and aims to develop and enhance the high intensity service provision across Sunderland.

The post holder will be employed on Sunderland Counselling Service terms and conditions and offered an NHS comparable agenda for change Band Six salary. They will be based within a multi-disciplinary team within Sunderland Talking Therapies (STT) Service and be expected to effectively comply with the CNTWs Clinical and Information Governance requirements.

The post holder will be provided with regular clinical and case management supervision. Job responsibilities

This is a training post within NHS Talking Therapies, and the post holder will work providing High Intensity interventions whilst undertaking a programme of training for this role provided by Teesside University

This intensive training post will equip the post holder to provide cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) to clients with a range of complex problems for which CBT is demonstrated to be clinically effective. The post holder will work into the service for approximately 3 days a week using the newly developed skills whilst attending the training programme for the other days

The post holder will be employed on Sunderland Counselling Service terms and conditions and offered an NHS comparable agenda for change Band Six salary. They will be based within a multi-disciplinary team within Sunderland Talking Therapies (STT) Service and be expected to effectively comply with the CNTWs Clinical and Information Governance requirements

The post holder will work with people with diverse cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters when necessary and should be committed to equal opportunities.

The post-holder will be provided with regular line management, clinical and case management supervision by staff based within STT along with SCS.

This will be a permanent position subject to a successful probationary period of twelve months.

The post holder may be called upon to use a personal means of transport while engaged in the work of the service for which travel expenses will be available.

The post holder will be entitled to 30 days annual leave at normal salary rate or pro rata for part of a year alongside entitlement to all statutory public holidays.

Formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for clients

Carry out risk and safeguarding assessments/formulations in clinical practice and follow the agreed service /Trust protocols to manage risk effectively

Educate and involve family members and others in treatment where appropriate, conveying CBT formulations with sensitivity and in easily understood language

Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the number of client contacts offered, and clinical sessions carried out per week to minimise waiting times and ensure treatment delivery remains accessible and convenient
