Job summary

Claire House is excited to be developing our Music Therapy Service, and we are seeking to recruit an experienced Music Therapist. You will have a passion for supporting the psychological and emotional wellbeing of children and young people with highly complex care needs and their families. You will deliver Music Therapy through 1:1 and group settings based at our two hospice sites in Wirral and Liverpool, as well as out in the community, therefore you are required to hold a full UK driving licence.

Day to day, you will work alongside our well-established multidisciplinary teams to deliver of high-quality specialist therapeutic support to children and their families under the care ofClaire House Childrens Hospice.

Alongside the direct therapeutic work, you will contribute to further establishing and embedding the music therapy service within the hospice and you will have the opportunity to offer support and training to the clinical team, so they can in turn offer musical experiences to children and young people in your absence.

Main duties of the job

Main Purpose of Post

To work as part of Claire House multi-disciplinary teams, to provide a Music Therapy service to children, young people, and their families with palliative needs. This includes specialist music therapy assessment and intervention, on an individual or group basis. The therapeutic interventions will delivered within professional guidelines and overall frameworks of Claire House policies and procedures and in all the Claire House settings, Wirral Hospice, Liverpool Day Care Hub and community.

As this is a new role within the hospice, an exciting key element of this post will be contributing to the development of a high-quality therapeutic music service for young people and their families. The post holder will work collaboratively with other Claire House teams and departments to ensure they are meeting the emotional needs of families. In addition to the delivery of individual and group therapeutic work, the role will involve the promotion of a psychotherapeutic hospice environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical

To assess the eligibility of children, young people and families for Music Therapy.

To formulate and deliver Music Therapy treatment and management plans for children,young people and their families. This might draw upon exploratory, reflective, supportive or developmental approaches, in individual and group formats.

To evaluate and make decisions about utilising theoretical and therapeutic models, drawing upon and complex factors regarding historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family, or group.

To exercise autonomous professional judgement and responsibility for the therapeutic intervention of children and families including assessment, formulation, intervention, discharge, and effective communication of these plans with referrers and other multi-agency professionals involved in the care of the child and family on a regular basis.

To provide specialist therapeutic advice, guidance, and consultation to colleagues.

To provide reports and communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner concerning the assessment, formulation, and treatment plans of clients.

To liaise with other health and social care staff, from a range of agencies, in the care provided to clients.

To provide and receive information in a skilled and sensitive manner using high levels of interpersonal skills.

To participate in MDT meetings/discussions providing a therapeutic perspective as appropriate.

Policy and Service Development

To contribute to the development of an embedded Music Therapy service, in collaboration with Manager and Clinical Leads.

To contribute to the development and implementation of Music Therapy operational policies and services.

Build and promote cross organisational working relationships, developing working relationships which facilitate the effective delivery of therapeutic services.

To be proactive in identifying ways of improving and developing practices, taking responsibility for identified project work/research.

Represent Claire House at appropriate care networking meetings.

Professional and Advisory

To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD and development programs.

To prepare for and attend regular 1-to-1s and Annual Appraisals with your line manager, to collaboratively set aims and objectives and monitor progress.

To maintain the highest standards of record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing.

To be aware of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to both children and families and mental health.

To attend Music Therapy meetings locally and nationally and contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in Music Therapy across the hospice and palliative care sector.

Teaching, Training and Supervision

To receive regular clinical supervision and professional management, according to good practice guidelines, from an experienced Music Therapist and where appropriate clinical supervision from other senior professional colleagues.

To provide education around the value of Music therapy and develop skills in providing advice and/or clinical supervision of other staff members, as appropriate.

  • Registered with the HCPC.

  • Experience of working with children and young people with profound multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).
  • Knowledge and/or experience of working within a trauma informed framework.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the British Association of Music Therapy and HPCP.

  • Experience of working within a paediatric health setting with children and families addressing psychological issues arising from complex health and/or palliative care needs.
