The role is pro rata - 22.5 - 28 hour per week
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, supporting, and enhancing the volunteer journey from recruitment and onboarding through engagement, development, and retention. The role will look for collaborative approaches and partnerships.
It will work alongside the Head of People and Culture to deliver the VS Strategy. The role ensures volunteers have a positive, meaningful, and well-supported experience that aligns with organisational goals and values. The role will strengthen relationships with external stakeholders to attract, recruit, and retain volunteers while maintaining high standards of safeguarding and governance.
Main duties of the job
Volunteer Recruitment & Onboarding
- Recruit volunteers for a range of hospice roles, including patient-facing and retail and warehouse roles
- Work with internal teams and external partners to co-design volunteer roles that meet service needs
- Manage safe recruitment processes, including interviews, references, and required background checks
- Develop and deliver joint volunteer recruitment initiatives with partner organisations
- Identify new recruitment pathways, including community-based, education, and employer-supported volunteering
- Coordinate volunteer induction programmes, ensuring understanding of hospice values, boundaries, and confidentiality
Volunteer Support & Wellbeing
- Act as the volunteer service contact for volunteers
- Conduct touchpoint volunteer reviews
- Promote volunteer wellbeing, reflective practice, and appropriate signposting for support
- Provide ongoing guidance to line managers and support problem-solving
Volunteer Experience & Retention
- Create a positive, inclusive, and respectful volunteer culture
- Monitor volunteer satisfaction and engagement
- Gather feedback and use insights to improve volunteer roles and experiences
- Arrange thank you events for volunteers including long service awards

Wakefield Hospice is a purpose-built specialist palliative care unit that opened in April 1990 providing 8 single ensuite bedrooms and 2 four bed ward areas, a day therapy unit, bereavement support and education. Over the years the day care unit developed initially into a day therapy unit and ultimately into a drop-In centre providing therapies, information and care for patients, carers and bereaved families.
