We are looking for an exceptional healthcare leader to take our amazing Care Services to the next level and deliver against our ambitious strategy for 2026 and beyond. Building on its strong foundations as a hospice charity that is well-respected and highly regarded by beneficiaries, partners and supporters alike, Tynedale Hospice at Home is committed to increasing its impact over the coming years. This role represents an exciting opportunity to lead our care workforce to deliver this.

Main duties of the job

The Head of Care will be responsible for working with the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team to increase the reach and effectiveness of the Hospices care provision for its local community. The ideal candidate will be an innovative, data-driven Registered Nurse or Senior Care Service Manager with outstanding leadership skills and extensive experience of delivering nurse-led clinicalservices.

The successful postholder will be able to fulfil the role of Registered Manager with the CQC, ensuring that the service meets all legal and regulatory requirements and striving towards taking our current Good rating to Outstanding.

Location: Hexham, Northumberland. Predominately office based with some home working depending on candidates preference.

Key Tasks / Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the Care Services department with responsibility for all aspects of care/clinical service delivery to deliver against the organisations strategy. To be responsible for ensuring workforce accountability for the delivery of agreed plans and targets.
  • Ensure compliance with external requirements related to care including the Health and Social Care Act 2022, Care Quality Commission and the Nursing and Midwifery Council. As CQC Registered Manager, ensure care services are safe, caring, responsive, effective and well-led to comply with CQC regulations. Develop and implement a plan to work towards Outstanding across all CQC domains.
  • Act as Designated Senior Manager in relation to the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
  • Ensure the highest standards of care by developing, implementing and monitoring best practice policies and procedures to support the operation of an integrated and flexible patient-centred service in line with identified outcomes.
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute effectively to the overall leadership of THH including annual business planning and strategy development.
  • Prepare comprehensive and accurate reports for internal use, the Board of Trustees and external stakeholders (as required) to demonstrate that clinical services are well-led and provide high quality care to all services users.
  • Develop and lead a robust measurement approach, with the collection and use of meaningful data and information embedded across the department.
  • Develop and lead an Improvement System and Culture across the department and wider organisation, embedding improvement philosophy and methodology alongside a strong focus on measurement. Actively promote multi-disciplinary and cross-organisational working to ensure a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop services to improve their reach and impact, in collaboration with other health and care partners and service beneficiaries.
  • Lead on the development of Neighbourhood Health initiatives in the geographical area in which THH operates.
  • Working with Chief Executive, raise the profile and reputation of THH care services, working closely with health and care partners. Represent THH as required at a strategic level e.g. West Northumberland Palliative Care Partnership, ICB, regional and national hospice networks.
  • Be responsible for the departmental budget, managing resource allocation to ensure services meet clinical/patient needs, delivering the highest possible value for funds raised.

  • Significant senior experience in the leadership and development of health and social care services.
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of working within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience of operating as a Senior Manager, including planning and project management.
  • Experience of designing and developing services to improve efficiency, productivity, reach and impact.
  • Experience, understanding and application of the principles of clinical governance and quality improvement to drive continuous clinical / care quality and service improvement.
  • Experience of leading effective change management.
  • Ability to undertake risk assessments in a clinical / care setting and to develop risk mitigation actions where applicable.

  • Experience in a Hospice or other PAEOLC setting.

  • Able to meet the requirements of registration and periodic re-validation with a recognised professional body including DBS, NMC and CQC (fulfilling Registered Manager role).

Desirable

  • Palliative and End of Life Care (PAEOLC) related post registration qualification e.g. Certificate in Palliative Care.
