Part 1: Job Profile
a) Main purpose of the job
To work collaboratively within the Practice Education and Quality Team to facilitate & deliver teaching, practice development and professional learning initiatives. To participate in educational opportunities to develop and promote the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, holistic palliative care for children, young adults, and their families.
b) Work relationships
The role falls within the Practice Education and Quality Team which provides education and support for all the SSCH care teams. These are: the family support team, the community nursing team, SPACE (the specialist palliative care team), care administration and the in-house nursing team. The post holder will have working relationships with all care staff.
Teaching and learning activities are guided by training needs analyses undertaken by all care teams so the post holder will work in collaboration with the Head of Hospice Services, Head of Family Support Services and Head of Community and SPACE.
The post holder will liaise with external training providers to enable high quality training provision in all aspects of paediatric palliative care.
c) Scope of job
The post holder will support SSCH to deliver high quality evidence-based care to all children and families by:
Providing and facilitating teaching and learning about paediatric palliative care.
Teaching and assessing staff as they develop and improve clinical competence.
In collaboration with the PEQ team and senior leadership team; ensuring that SSCH competence framework, policies and procedures are up to date and evidence-based.
In collaboration with the PEQ team; supporting specific learners in practice.
Promote a learning environment within all SSCH care teams.
The Shooting Star Childrens Hospices care service is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The post holder will be required to work a variety of shifts across the 24 hours.
This post is 50% clinical (working on shift) and 50% Education (planning and delivering teaching)
Part 2: Main duties and key responsibilities
a) Teaching and Assessing
Providing and facilitating teaching and learning about paediatric palliative care.
participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational and practice development activities within Shooting Star Childrens Hospices care services both formally and informally.
sustain an awareness of developments within paediatric palliative care, nursing and health education at local and national level.
work alongside members of the in house care team to support, assess and guide practice.
Teaching and assessing staff as they develop and improve clinical competence.
Develop and maintain a lead education role in the following areas:
1. Long term ventilation & general respiratory management
2. Tracheostomy care
3. Neurology including complex seizure management
4. Caring for children with complex needs
5. Tissue viability
6. Intravenous administration of medications and parental nutrition
7. Artificial feeding
8. Delivery of subcutaneous medication at end of life
9. Urinary catheterisation
10. Medication management including transcribing of medications
be part of the clinical on call rota
lead and take an active role in ensuring the assessment of clinical competencies are completed. Ensuring that individual members of the care team are supported to maintain the required proficiency and high calibre of practice.
deliver constructive feedback to care team members and other learners about clinical skills and performance review in liaison with their line managers.
participate in the induction programme for new starters within the care services and wider organisation as required.
Ensuring that SSCH competence framework, policies and procedures are up to date and evidence based.
participate in the review of policies, protocols and guidelines used at Shooting Star Childrens Hospices and ensure that they are up to date and supported by current evidence
support SSCHs participation in paediatric palliative care research both internal and external
work collaboratively with the Senior Care Leadership team (SCLT) in the maintenance and implementation of the competence-based practice framework to ensure quality service delivery.
Supporting Specific Learners in Practice
support and facilitate the development of nursing student mentors from within the care team.
be involved in the facilitation of student placements for nursing students, AHP students, therapy students and medical students
support learners undertaking care-based apprenticeships (such as nursing associate apprenticeships)
support, guide and assess new carers undertaking The Care Certificate
Promote a Learning Environment with all SSCH Care Teams
act as a role model to members of the care teams, demonstrating effective clinical leadership and delivering high quality palliative care to children, young adults, and their families
facilitate and support the clinical supervision programme with the care services.
collaborate with senior care team colleagues to ensure effective communication and consistent approach to care delivery
take responsibility for your own professional development
abide by ethical and legal codes e.g. NMC code of professional conduct
source and advertise external learning opportunities for staff in all care roles at SSCH
b) Other duties
The post holder must be able and willing to get to and work in both hospices.
The post holder should be prepared to attend SSCH meetings in different parts of the country. Some meetings may be during evenings or weekends.
The post holder will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service check
The post holder must live within one hour 30 minutes travel time to Christophers hospice (in order to be on the clinical on call rota).
c) Mandatory Criteria
1. Other duties
The post holder will be working in a developing environment, and they will therefore be expected to undertake other appropriate duties as required for the effective operation of Shooting Star Childrens Hospices.
2. Professional Codes of Conduct
The post holder will be required to respect professional codes of conduct and practice relevant to their role, as appropriate
3. Health and Safety
Be responsible for health and safety in the area under their control and ensure that they are familiar with Shooting Star Childrens Hospices policy on health and safety at work.
4. Mandatory Training
The post holder will attend all mandatory training relevant to their role
