General Practice Assistant

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a clinical or non-clinical General Practice Assistant (GPA) to join the North West Leicestershire GP Federation to support the Primary Care Network. Clinical GPAs are supported and mentored by our Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioner, whilst non-clinical GPAs are supported and mentored by our HR Manager. You would work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a patient-facing environment.

The post holder will be employed by North West Leicestershire Federation and this position would be based at one of the GP practices within the PCN, Castle Medical Group in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

Main duties of the job

The role of the GPA is to safely deliver a combination of routine administrative tasks and some basic clinical duties in the general practice setting. The main duty is to support General Practitioners in their day-to-day management of patients, specifically aimed at reducing the administrative burden, making best use of consultation time and supporting patients.

Job responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities are:

Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacists etc.

Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes.

Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients.

Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.

Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs and phlebotomy.

Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign, such as insurance forms mortgage, benefits agency forms etc.

Supporting the GP with medicine reconciliation and the processing of prescriptions.

Explaining treatment procedures to patients.

Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g., speaking with an on-call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s).

Support the GP with immunisations/wound care.

  • Experience of supporting people, their families and carers in a related role (including unpaid work)
  • Knowledge of IT systems, including ability to use word processing skills, emails and the internet to create simple plans and reports

Desirable

  • Knowledge of GP Systems (SystmOne or EMIS Web)

Qualifications

  • Achieved or is prepared to work towards gaining the GPA Accredited Training Programme qualification

Desirable

  • NVQ Level 3, Advanced level or equivalent qualifications or working towards this level
