The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth

Critical Care Fellows

The closing date is 09 February 2026

Job summary

St John & St Elizabeth Hospital is a private hospital in St Johns Wood, moments walk from St Johns Wood tube station. The hospital is Londons leading charitable hospital, and uniquely its business model is that all profits are used to part fund an NHS commissioned hospice, St Johns Hospice, which is an integral part of the hospitals estate. St Johns Hospice provides high quality, holistic care to those with life-limiting illnesses and their families across North London, all completely free of charge.

The hospital has 60 inpatient beds, including 4 HDU beds, plus separate day case adult and Paediatric wards. The hospital admits a mixture of medical and surgical patients. There are 6 operating theatres, hosting for a wide range of surgical specialties, but excluding neurosurgery and cardiac. There are elective theatre lists running 6 days a week, plus a 24/7 on-call emergency theatre team. At the front of the hospital there is an Urgent Care Centre that sees approximately 12,000 individuals per annum, some of who are subsequently admitted to the hospital

Main duties of the job

The hospital seeks to appoint appropriately skilled and motivated Critical Care Fellows to support the work undertaken within the hospital, including providing resident doctor cover for the 4 HDU beds. The Critical Care Fellow is one of two doctors resident within the hospital 24/7, the other being a ward RMO. Whilst the Critical Care Fellow primarily is expected to provide care to adults, experience in Paediatric anaesthesia or critical care would be advantageous. Our current model is that during the time that there are day-case Paediatric cases on site, a dedicated Anaesthetic Paediatric Registrar provides the primary cover for such patients, with support from the patients Consultant Surgeon and Anaesthetist, plus a Consultant Paediatrician.

Of particular note, for the adult patients, care is provided by the patients primary consultant, plus Consultant Anaesthetist where applicable. Additionally, there is an on-call ICU Consultant who provides clinical supervision and support for the Critical Care Fellow.

The hospital currently employs 5 permanent Critical Care Fellows, who are contracted to work a variety of hours per week: from 9 48 hours per week. The hospital seeks to increase this number, thereby filling current rota gaps and providing additional flexibility and continuity within the rota.

About us

At the time of application, it would be of value if applicants stated their preferred number of working hours per week we are keen to appoint the best possible candidates to the role and are agreeable to working collaboratively with individuals to fulfil our mutual requirements. The Critical Care Fellow rota is largely annualised, primarily to maximise transparency and flexibility within working lives.

Applications will only be considered from those who have worked previously within the UK, have appropriate GMC registration and the appropriate skills and attitude.

As well as ongoing development and training, we offer our employees a wide range of benefits; including up to 27 days annual leave, generous private healthcare cover, contributory pension schemes including continuation of the NHS pension.
