Job summary

We are currently looking for a dynamic and dedicated Radiographer to join our busy Imaging Department.

The post holder will be responsible for performing a range of diagnostic radiographic procedures as required throughout the Hospital in General X-ray, Theatres, Fluoroscopy and CT.

You will also be expected to participate in the Governance of the Department in areas including Risk Management, Health and Safety and Audit activities.

What would be my responsibilities as the Rotational Radiographer:

  • Assess the clinical justification of Radiography referrals
  • Act as a point of advice for imaging referrers
  • Act as a point of advice for patient enquiries regarding their referral
  • Acquire diagnostic images and physically position the full range of patient presentations
  • Operate advanced software on specialised Radiological equipment

2. JOB PURPOSE

Ensure that all data inputs are recorded for patient record integrity, accounts and statistical evaluation purposes.

Participate in the safety and governance of the Department in areas including Risk Management, Medicines Management, Health and Safety, research and audit activities.

5. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST

Key Tasks

5.1 Professional

Assess the clinical justification of Radiography referrals in line with both national regulations, IR(ME)R2018, and local protocols and in liaison with the consultant Radiologist.

Act as an operator under IR(ME)R 2018

Act as a point of advice for imaging referrers.

Act as a point of advice for patient enquiries regarding their referral

Act as a patient advocate in Radiation protection issues.

Assess specific communication needs of individual patients

Acquire diagnostic images and physically position the full range of patient presentations accurately for examinations taking into account patient limitations and adapting standard techniques where necessary.

Operate advanced software on specialised Radiological equipment e.g. image reformatting and dynamic imaging.

Participate in the organisation, co-ordination and prioritisation of the flow of work within the department, ensuring the delivery of an efficient and effective diagnostic imaging service.

Ensure that a high standard of patient care and high professional standards are maintained throughout the Imaging department.

Contribute to the development of departmental policies and procedures relating to patient care and the delivery of a diagnostic imaging service.

Be involved in the development and monitoring of standards of patient care and service delivery

Participate in a CPD programme for all staff.

Actively participate in the quality assurance programmes.

Liaise with referral source and Consultant Radiologist where clarification is required regarding selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination.

Review images and in liaison with Radiologists ensure that supplementary imaging procedures are considered prior to patient departure from the Department.

Undertake IV cannulation for patients requiring the injection of contrast media following the required training and assessment of competence.

Ensure that images are presented for reporting purposes in a timely and accurate manner.

Ensure that urgent findings are communicated to the appropriate person and patients are directed accordingly.

Undertake other duties as and when required by the demands of the service.

5.2 Clinical:

Assess clinical justification of Radiography referrals in line with both national regulations and local protocols and in liaison with the consultant Radiologist.

Ensure patients have agreed to exposure to Ionising Radiation prior to the examination

Maintain a high level of expertise in the safe operation of X-Ray equipment and manage faults effectively.

Be familiar with the range of technical applications available on Imaging Equipment.

Maintain accurate patient records by input of accurate information to reflect the service provided and meet professional standards

Ascertain from the patient, patients guardian or the referrer, patients suitability for receipt of intravenous contrast media.

Perform intravenous cannulation and manual injection of contrast agent.

Administer intravenous contrast media using a pressure injector.

Work as part of a team to ensure effective communication and delivery of care.

Liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a high quality service to patients and clinicians.

Assist Consultant Radiologists and other practitioners during Image guided procedures

Set up and clear a basic sterile trolley for interventional procedures.

Ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised where necessary. Paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linens.

Participate in the delivery of an out of hours service, providing a stand/by and on call service to patients requiring urgent imaging due to acute trauma or illness.

Offer support, advice and motivation to work experience students and new starters.

Effectively liaise with all disciplines of staff within the Imaging department giving support and advice where necessary.

Participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the department and Hospital, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessment.

Adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patients or departmental need.

Report deficits in the data integrity of the Information systems in use in the department.

Reflect on systems of work and communicate areas of deficit or potential advancement.

Report clinical, non-clinical and radiation incidents in line with Hospital and Departmental Risk Management policies.

Enter accurate patient and examination data onto PIMS and future systems for data records and accounting requirements.

Promote the work of the department and the hospital by contact with potential users and by ensuring patient satisfaction.

Manage and lead the day-to-day organisation of specific areas of the department when required to do so by the lead general radiographer or the Imaging manager.

Trouble-shoot equipment faults and make suitable provision for the service in the event of equipment failure. Notify the relevant technical support of the fault and arrange for timely repair work to be done. Ensure records surrounding such events are maintained.

Demonstrate a wide range of problem solving skills involving allocation of staff due to absence and associated adequate service provision.

Perform non-radiographic tasks intrinsic to the day to day running of the department, for example:

making appointments

answering telephones and responding to enquiries

patient registration and accounting tasks

chaperone duties for ultrasound where required

Communicate effectively with the patient accurately reflecting the nature of the procedure and ensuring valid and informed consent has been obtained where necessary according to departmental policies.

Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination.

Participate in mandatory training and actively pursue Continuous Professional Development keeping an up to date personal record.

Maintain knowledge of technological and technical advances in methods of diagnostic Imaging in order to promote a culture of continuous improvement within the department.

Develop knowledge and understanding within evidence based framework and transfer to situations encountered in practice.

Provide expert advice and supervision to radiographic assistants and new radiographers

Participate in the training and development of new radiographers, radiographic assistants and administration staff, acting as mentor / supervisor when required
