Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Healthcare Assistant to work within the inpatient unit at our Little Hulton site, supporting patients (and those close to them) with a life limiting illness.

The Person

You will be a compassionate and proactive Healthcare Assistant with a strong person-centred approach to palliative care.

You will have:

  • An interest in specialist palliative care and a commitment to compassionate practice.
  • Experience working as a HCA in a hospital or similar care setting.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, with an understanding of confidentiality.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team and use initiative to prioritise work.
  • A willingness to work towards the Care Certificate and develop IT skills.
  • An understanding of safeguarding and clinical governance.
  • Flexibility to work; days, nights and unsocial hours.

Main duties of the job

The Role

You will work closely with registered nurses as part of a compassionate, multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of high-quality specialist palliative care.

You will:

  • Support the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of person-centred palliative care.
  • Provide care in a compassionate, sensitive and respectful manner.
  • Work collaboratively with nurses and other professionals to ensure safe, timely and effective care.
  • Build positive working relationships within the team to support patients and those close to them.

  • Provide holistic palliative care and support (appropriate to their role as a HCA) to patients and those closest to them
  • Ensure accurate record keeping on EMIS in accordance with organisational requirements
  • Effectively communicate with members of the multidisciplinary team and contribute to the planning of care
  • Work in accordance with hospice policies to ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  • Assist in providing bereavement support to carers and relative, participating in relevant remembrance events.
  • Actively participate in the hospice Performance Development review process to identify own learning needs and take necessary steps to reach objectives and develop own competence to practice.
  • Use support systems appropriately to support wellbeing and personal development e.g. Schwartz rounds, reflection sessions.
  • Act as an ambassador for Moya Cole Hospice by maintaining a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Provide support to new members of the team, students and volunteers.
  • Support the team in developing and implementing agreed team initiatives.
  • Take an active part in ward meetings.
  • Support with relevant link groups.
