Job summary

The role centres on leading the financial direction of the organisationsafeguarding its assets, and enabling informed decision making. A Head of Finance acts as a strategic partner to the executive team translating financial insights into actionable plans and ensuring the business has the resources, systems, and discipline to achieve its goals.

Main duties of the job

  • Financial strategy and planning Develop longterm financial plans, forecasting models, and investment strategies aligned with organisational objectives. Provide scenario analysis and strategic recommendations to the CEO and board.

  • Budgeting and performance management Lead the annual budgeting cycle, monitor performance against targets, and drive accountability across departments. Identify risks, opportunities, and efficiency improvements.

  • Financial reporting and governance Oversee accurate, timely reporting for internal stakeholders, auditors, regulators, and the board. Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax requirements, and statutory obligations.

  • Cashflow and capital management Manage liquidity, working capital, and funding needs. Optimise capital structure and maintain strong banking and investor relationships.

  • Risk management and controls Strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and risk frameworks. Ensure robust processes for procurement, expenses, approvals, and financial systems.

  • Leadership and team development Lead and develop the finance team, fostering a highperformance culture. Build capability in financial analysis, business partnering, and operational finance.

  • Business partnering Collaborate with operational leaders to support commercial decisions, pricing, investments, and cost optimisation. Provide financial insight that shapes strategic initiatives.

About us

Barnsley Healthcare Federation is a notforprofit NHS provider organisation that plays a central role in delivering and coordinating primary care across Barnsley. It brings together all 31 GP practices in the borough through a single Primary Care Network (PCN), making it the largest PCN in the country and serving more than 260,000 patients.

  • Managing the Barnsley Primary Care Network, recruiting specialist staff, and providing centralised support to GP practices.

  • Delivering community based services such as health and wellbeing coaching, social prescribing, first contact physiotherapy, and directly managing several GP practices.
