Job summary

Gaddum are looking for an experienced Therapeutic Counsellor to work in our NHS Talking Therapies Service.As a Therapeutic Counsellor, you will be responsible for the delivery of a therapeutic counselling service to adults in the City of Manchester who have been referred into Gaddums NHS Talking Therapies, for anxiety and depression programme (formerly known as IAPT).

The role is a permanent position, working 10 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

You will be providing time-limited therapeutic counselling session to individuals referred to Gaddum. Session are offered via telephone, online and in person depending on client choice. You will also be completing initial assessment for new referrals to determine the appropriate interventions to meet their need, and signposting to other services where necessary.

The successful post-holder must possess as a minimum a counselling diploma or equivalent and have experience of working with clients experiencing common mental health conditions. Preference will be given to those who are CBT Trained.

As a Therapeutic Counsellor, you will be responsible for the delivery of a therapeutic counselling service to adults in the City of Manchester who have been referred into Gaddums NHS Talking Therapies, for anxiety and depression programme (formerly known as IAPT).

Your 10-hour contract will consist of two five-hour sessions (clinics) each comprising four 50-minute therapy sessions with allocated clients and one hour admin time. Your working hours will usually be split over two days, however there is a possibility to condense the two sessions into one day if preferred. You will also be required to carry 2 out initial assessments with clients from time to time, such as when you have cancellations.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful post-holder must possess as a minimum a counselling diploma or equivalent and have experience of working with clients experiencing common mental health conditions. Preference will be given to those who are CBT Trained.

Key responsibilities:

Provide time-limited therapeutic counselling sessions (8-12 sessions) to individuals referred to Gaddum. Sessions are offered via telephone, online, and in person, depending on client choice.

Ensure that practice complies with NHS Talking Therapies service guidelines, including completing all requirements relating to data collection within the service.

Undertake initial assessments for new referrals in order to determine the appropriate interventions to meet their needs, and signposting to other services where necessary.

Make effective use of outcome measures in counselling sessions to monitor and promote wellbeing for clients and contribute to the achievement of overall service recovery targets.

Arrange and attend monthly external clinical supervision.

Attend management supervision meetings and team meetings either in person or online

Record accurate, appropriate, and timely notes using an electronic case management system working within the service policies and procedures.

Work closely with the administration team who will support with the management of your clinical diary, allocations, and discharges.

Provide information necessary to monitor and evaluate Gaddums therapy services, such as case studies or reporting data.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and procedures in relation to talking therapies, Mental Health, and Primary Care Services.

Ensure the maintenance of excellent standards of practice, observing BACP ethical framework and/or other guidance, and keeping up to date on new recommendations/guidelines set by the Department of Health (e.g. The NHS Talking Therapies Manual and NICE Clinical guidelines).

Contribute to the development of best practice within the service.

Provide a timely response to safeguarding and risk issues that arise, in line with Gaddums safeguarding procedures.

Work to Gaddums policies and procedures, specifically Health, Safety, and Risk Management, Safeguarding, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion,

Confidentiality, and Information Governance.

Where applicable, adhere to GP surgery procedures where you may be based.

Demonstrate an understanding of and a commitment to anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice.

Develop and maintain close working relationships with other Gaddum staff and services.

Essential

  • English and Maths GCSE at grades C or above (or equivalent qualification)
  • Qualified to Degree, MSc, MA, or Diploma level in Counselling or equivalent in CBT.
  • Competence in and possession of a recognised theoretical model of counselling.

Desirable

  • Membership of a Professional body (e.g. BACP, Social Work England
  • Additional recognised qualification for Talking Therapies e.g. Counselling for Depression, IPT or CBT

  • Willing and eligible to work towards qualification in NHS Talking Therapies compliant modality, e.g. Counselling for Depression, IPT.

  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Experience of conducting assessments for service, including initial assessments and comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Experience of managing a client caseload and keeping up to date records using a database.
  • A robust understanding of Safeguarding.
  • An understanding of the relevant legislation relating to mental health
  • Knowledge of statutory services and mental health pathways and support across the community care, health and voluntary sector.
